Nina Stephens Obituary

Nina K. Stephens, 83, passed away on June 18, 2025. Born to Curtis and Myra Kimbrell on February 22, 1942, she grew up in the Taylors area, and graduated from Taylors High School and Greenville Tech. She spent her career working in the Greenville County Schools and the Greenville Hospital System.

Nina was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers (Roy, Ed, and Paul Kimbrell), and is survived by a sister, Pat Swords. She will be greatly missed by her husband (Charles L. Stephens), her children: Terri Stephens (Keith Klingensmith), Donna Dawley (Milford), and Stan Stephens (Alba), and her grandsons, Justin Dawley and Logan Rees.

Nina was truly an original. As befitting someone who was proclaimed "Wittiest" in her high school yearbook, she never lost her sense of humor. She loved growing her patch of castor bean plants (which the family called her "Poison Garden".) She eschewed footwear, even in winter. If she couldn't think of a word to describe something, she happily invented one. She celebrated the underdog and had little tolerance for phoniness or for people who "punched down."

The family would like to thank Dr. Concetta Gardziola (her oncologist), as well as the staff at Wren Hospice and Simpsonville Post Acute Care for all their help and support. At Nina's request, no services will be held.

Dear Terri, Donna, Stan, and Uncle Pop,

I am so sorry for your loss. We did not know until this week. Your mom/wife was a sweet, funny lady. I still remember the path we made going back and forth to one another's house. That little section never had a speck of grass.
Aunt Nina would say the funniest things--full of laughter. I know it has been many years, but I can still hear her and Pop laughing. I am sorry she was sick for so long, but thankful to God that she is no longer sick or suffering.

Love to you all-
Angie (Stephens) Smith

Loved your mom. I remember her giving us rides on a school bus when we were little. We thought it was a big deal, our Aunt Nina was a school bus driver (in high school).

I know that you kids were always there for her.

May the God of all comfort comfort you in the days ahead. The first year without them is rough. Praying for your dad.

Thanks for sharing the sweet pictures.

Love,
Ann Kimbrell Brewton

My mother was sick for so long that it was easy to forget what a dynamic person she was. We didn't always get along, but I think both of us enjoyed the occasional sparring. I will forever be grateful for her encouraging me to read, and then to go above and beyond to find scholarships for me to go to college. She delighted in both of her grandsons as well, encouraging them to be the best young men they could be. We love you, Mama, and will miss you profoundly.

I remember going over to her house when I was little and how she would tease me. When she gave me iced tea she joked that she sweetened it by tying a string to a grain of sugar and dragging it through the tea. Condolences to the family and may she rest in peace.

Nina was a beautiful strong woman. She loved her family and always put them first in her life. She lived her life until the end on her own terms. god bless her and her family.

God granted me the opportunity to meet her in October 2024. I had the blessing of sharing a very special moment and getting to know Stanly´s mother. In that moment, I felt a deep sense of peace by her side; I clearly sensed that she was, and will always be, a wonderful person.
She will always be remembered.
