James W. Arnett

JAMES W. ARNETT, 81, of Memphis, passed away November 3, 2005 at Methodist North Hospital. Mr. Arnett was a former deacon of Macon Road Church of Christ where he had been a faithful member for over 30 years. He was a retired vocational teacher for Memphis Area Technical School. Mr. Arnett, known as J.W., was an All-Memphis football player at South Side High School in the early 40s and attended Ole Miss on a football scholarship. Mr. Arnett served on the board of directors for the former Mid-South Christian Nursing Home. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf with his wife, children and grandchildren and served as a volunteer at T.O. Fuller Golf Course. Mr. Arnett is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude Morthland Arnett; two sons, Larry E. Arnett of Bartlett and J. Richard "Rick" Arnett of Lakeland; a daughter, Janice Wiley of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Marguerite Ray of Memphis and Libby Golightly of Newbern, TN; four grandchildren, Aimee Washburn, Richard Arnett, Alex Wilshire and Ben Wilshire; a great-granddaughter, and a great-grandchild on the way, ironically with the due date of June 18, Mr. Arnett's birthday. Graveside services will be at noon Saturday, November 5 at Forest Hill Cemetery East, with visitation from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to HOPEWORKS.
