Norma Rae Hammond (Mitchell), affectionately known as Rae, went to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully on July 2, 2024, at the age of 85 in Greenville, South Carolina. Born on April 23, 1939, in Kinston, North Carolina, Rae was a beacon of kindness, grace, and steadfast faith throughout her life.

Rae and her beloved husband, Fred W. Hammond, were longtime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida before retiring to their home in the North Carolina mountains. In the last few years, they enjoyed participating in services via live stream from Discover Church in Irving, Texas, embracing their faith from their home in Greenville, South Carolina

A talented entrepreneur, Rae was the proud owner of Floriade Florist in Jacksonville Beach, where her passion for flowers and plants flourished. She was also a remarkable cook, known for crafting unique meals that delighted her family and friends.

Rae leaves behind a loving family: her husband, Fred; children, Cindy (Mike), Martin (Linda), Mary (Larry), and Phyllis (Glenn); stepchildren, Gary and Joni (Mike); 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, with the 18th expected soon. She is also survived by her sisters, Maxine, Peggy, Dee, and JoAnne. Rae was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Gladys Mitchell, and her brother, Donald Mercer.

Visitation will be held on August 10, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a service at 2:00 pm at Palmetto Mortuary, 1017 Mauldin Road, Greenville, SC 29607. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Rae's remarkable life. Palmetto Mortuary is assisting the family during this time.
