NORMA STERNBERG Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 8, 2017.
STERNBERG--Norma

Wollner, adored wife, mother, grandmother, sister, physician, died in her home Sunday, July 30th, surrounded by her family. She was born in 1929 and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, daughter of a poor but fabulous seamstress, and Norma made her way, against great odds, to medical school. She moved to New York City when she was 26 to do her residency at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she met and married fellow oncologist Stephen Sternberg, and where she served as a pediatric oncologist for the next 40 years. Norma had a distinguished and incomparable career at the hospital, developing treatments which substantially increased the cure rate for nonhodgkins lymphoma, starting the Brazilian children's Fund on behalf of hospital patients from her home country, and starting the Cancer Center's pediatric day hospital, a novel and game-changing concept in cancer care. Norma was the kind of dedicated physician that everyone hopes for, who never hesitated to take phone calls in the middle of the night from sick patients and worried parents. We will all miss her commitment, compassion, intelligence and endless depth of knowledge. Norma and her husband Stephen together devoted over 90 years of service to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, holding hands and walking to work every morning, until they retired in 1999. Norma was an avid gardener and cook, and for many years she and Stephen spent weekends at their beautiful Croton on Hudson country home, cooking, planting, pruning, weeding, and playing with their dogs, with martinis in hand. No one could throw a party like Norma, and she did so with her South American flair, creativity and contagious passion twice a year for most of her adult life. Norma was beloved and treasured by so many. She was fully Norma until the end, keen of mind, quick to laugh, with a fierce and loving spirit, priding herself on "telling it like it is." Norma is sorely missed by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Stephen; by her grandson, Murray, whom she cherished; by her loving daughters, Sue and Alessandra (James); brother, Alexandre Wollner (Lais); and by her ever-faithful "right hand," Catarina.

Every single day of my life I owe to her. She never let me down, even when there was no hope. She fought for me like a warrior. Giving up was not an option. Sometimes I feel there was something inside this woman that was far more than love. She would challenge the Gods to save her patients. I was diagnosed with AML in 1978 when I was 10 and the diagnosis was like a death sentence. No chance of transplant and, after a long fight, the only remaining possible path was to undergo trial treatments. We did it. She was like a giant. Never accepted to lose without going beyond all limits. When I got married, Dr. Wollner and Dr Wachtell flew to Brazil. They were our maid of honor and best man. I can´t describe my emotion. Years later, she met my two kids, two healthy 19 and 15 years old young men. I don´t know why I write so many personal memories here. I feel I need to express my gratitude and my respect for this extraordinary human being. May my life today and ever honor every minute she fought for me. Dear, "Dra. Norma", I´ll remember you ever and ever till the very end. Love you so much. Rest In Peace.

I recently acquired Dr. Sternberg's stamp collection through auction. Seeing her name on certain correspondence piqued my interest as I noticed she worked at Sloan Kettering. What an interesting woman. I also now I understand why a large part of her collection was devoted to Brazil. Tim Beno, Alexandria , LA 8/11/21

Dear Dr. Wollner,
You accepted by brother as patient when, at 16, was given no more than 6 months to live. You engaged him and supported him during a harsh one year chemotherapy protocol and amputation.
Today, he is a dental surgeon, a husband of an orthodentist and a father of two. He just turned 54.
May our gratitude reaches you and Your Light shines forever.

I worked with Dr. Wollner I the 1960s, when we both knew Dr. Lois Murphy. I admired Dr. Wollner greatly for her compassion and determination in her care of very sick children. So sorry for your loss.

Dr. Wollner has never left my heart since the moment I met her in 1984 when my daughter was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Her compassion and kindness made the nightmare bearable. This year my daughter will celebrate her 40th birthday. She followed Dr. Wollner's footsteps and is a pediatrician as well, and the proud mother of two little boys. None of that would have been possible without Dr. Wollner. I ache for the loss of such a wonderful spirit and my thoughts are with her family. She will continue to live in my heart forever.

August 9, 2017

I also wish to add my condolences to the entire Sternberg family, but especially to Allie and her father.
