ALEXANDER _ Norman James Peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday July 10, 2004, Norman James Alexander passed away at the age of 95. Predeceased by his parents Katherine and Robert, his first wife, Evelyn Reycraft, and in 1991 his wife of 46 years Juanita (Denny), as well as his brothers Jack and Bob. He will be lovingly remembered by his children; Jennifer King (partner Bill Empke), Katherine Shawcross (Gordon); Gillian Kernaghan (Richard), John Alexander (Linda) and Margot Kalinowsky (Ian); grandchildren Alexander King (Nieves), Victoria King; Deborah Shawcross (partner Kenton Scramstad); Maureen Gloud (Micheal), Patricia Clunie (Ian); Megan and Rebecca Alexander; David and Derek Kalinowsky and great-grandchildren Samantha and Danielle Moreau. Norman will be remembered by numerous nieces and nephews around the world. He will also be lovingly remembered by his dear friend Inez Truman. Born in Regina in 1909 he completed his early schooling in Brantford and Toronto. In 1927, he joined Richardson Securities which began his illustrious 75 year investment career. He enlisted in 1940 and served with the Royal Navy, on loan from the Royal Canadian Navy, and was discharged with the rank of Lt-Commander at the end of 1945. After the war, he returned to Richardson's in Toronto which lead to moves to Vancouver and then Winnipeg. Most of his business life was spent with the Richardson Companies where he ended his career as Managing Partner of Richardson Securities and Vice President of the parent company James Richardson and Sons. After his "retirement", he set up his own consulting and investment advisory firm working daily in his office until the age of 93. During his career he was President of the Investment Dealers Association and Vancouver Stock Exchange. He was a director of many corporations which included Investors Group, Dome Petroleum, and Westeel amongst others. Even though business was his passion he also recognized the importance of community service. He assisted both financially and through leadership roles for many organizations such as Balmoral Hall, the Children's Hospital Foundation, The Winnipeg Symphony, Mount Carmel Clinic, The Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, The Winnipeg Rowing Club, the I.H. Asper School of Business, and Junior Achievement to list just a few. While overseas in 1944, Norm married his "Scottish lass" Juanita Denny of Loch Lomond and shortly thereafter they started their family. Norm was an immensely proud and supportive father. Many of our happiest times with Dad were spending summers at Lake of the Woods or listening to his piano playing. His love of the lake has been passed on to the future generations. In father's spare time he enjoyed playing the piano, golfing, and travelling. In later years he enjoyed walks with his faithful four footed friend "Goldie". He has been a member of the Vancouver Club, Capilano Golf Club, St. Charles Country Club, Manitoba Club ( Past President) and a founding member of the Winnipeg Squash Club. The family would like to thank: Remy and Manny Zamora; and family for their loving care over the past years to both Norm and Juanita; special thanks to Dr. Lloyd Bartlett, his long-time friend and physician; the devoted caregivers who provided the love and support which enabled Dad to have quality time at home over the past year. A memorial service will be held on July 14, 2004 at 2:00 PM at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak Street, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norman's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, The Winnipeg Humane Society, or to the charity of your choice.
