Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2003.
BROWN _ Norman Edward 1911-2003 Norman Brown died in Lions Gate Hospital on May 9th, 2003, three days before his 92nd birthday. He was lucid to the end, but he just all wore out at once. He was born in Weymouth, Dorset, England in 1911, and was educated at Thomas Hardye School and the old Edward VI Grammar School in Dorchester. While training in municipal finance and as a Chartered Accountant, he moved to Kingston-on-Thames at the age of 19. There he met Irene Lillian Lewis (Bill), who he married in 1935. Early in 1939 Norman volunteered for the Royal Navy and was mobilized in August 1939 as a junior officer. He spent the winter on Atlantic convoys including the first Canadian Troop Convoy and saw action at Narvik and in the Mediterranean at Oran, West Africa. Transferred ashore, he formed the Liverpool support command in the Battle of the Atlantic, before being again transferred to the Fleet Air Arm in the administration of Naval Air Stations. In 1943 he joined the British Admiralty Delegation in Washington D.C. as part of the Naval Air Lend-Lease programme. He retired from the Navy in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. Coming to Canada in 1947, he pursued his career as a Chartered Accountant, Financial Executive and Management Consultant, in professional practice, public finance and industry. He was a past chairman or President of several bodies including the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and the Vancouver Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute. In recent years, he was instrumental in the formation of several community foundations. His wife Bill died suddenly in 1971. He leaves his son Patrick (Eileen) and daughter Pene Hollingworth (Doug); four grandchildren, Elizabeth-Anne Chambers (Jeff), Camilla Brown (Rick Schmohl), Shannon Hazelton (Andy), and Drew Hollingworth (Nadera), along with eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Hannah, Hayden, Cole, Kayla, Max, Shaneika, and Ella. A Memorial Service will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, May 20th, 2003 at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, 11th and Inglewood, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the British Columbia Lung Association.
