Norman Miller Obituary

Norman J. Miller Sr., 72, of Cherry Township, Dushore, Pa., passed away at Memorial Hospital on Monday evening, Aug. 30, 2010.

He was born on July 19, 1938, in Forksville, Pa., a son of the late Frederick and Dolores Bevan Miller.

Norman is a veteran of the United States Navy, and a graduate of Williamsport Area Community College.

On Oct. 13, 1961, Norman married the former Virginia Phillips in Hillsgrove, Pa.; they have celebrated nearly 49 years of marriage.

Prior to his retirement he was employed as a civil engineer for PennDOT.

From 1964-1994, he played softball throughout the area. He played in the AA Pennsylvania Major Softball League and the Williamsport City League. His team played and defeated King & Court twice.

He was a former member of the Mildred American Legion Post No. 452. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge No. 163, F.&A.M., and was a Past Master and served as Chaplain for many years, and was a member of Williamsport Consistory. He was a county commissioner from 1996-2000; he was an EMT, and a member of the Mildred Fire & Ambulance Company, White Ash Association, and was a deputy sheriff. He was also a Cherry Township Emergency Coordinator, and also served on the Sullivan County Planning Commission, and the Northern Tier Transportation Authority Advisory Board.

He is survived by: his wife, Virginia Miller, at home; three children, Molli (Bill) Kinsey of Dushore, Pa., N. James (Nancy) Miller of Millville, Pa., and Michele (Luke) Burkhardt of Franklin, Pa.; sister and brothers Nesta Myers of Forksville, Pa., Henry Miller of Dillsburg, Pa., and Larry Miller of Carlisle, Pa.; four grandchildren, Ethan and Ryan Kinsey, and Andrea and Aaron Burkhardt; and special friend Millie Dessify.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheri Lynn Miller in 1962, and by a sister, Naomi Brown in 1989.

Friends and family are invited to call from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, Pa. Masonic funeral services will be held Friday evening.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the funeral home, with the Pastor John Klem, of the Fundamental Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mildred Fire Company, School Road, Mildred, PA 188632-0147; or the Sullivan County Library, 206 Center St., Dushore, PA 18614, in memory of Norman.

My most sincere condolences to Virginia and Family. Norm helped a lot of people, serving as Co-Captain of the Mildred ambulance for nearly ten years, and an EMT for six. He was truly a civic minded individual, and will be greatly missed.
