Norman SHERRITT Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Aug. 22, 2013.
SHERRITT, Norman Albert
Born August 22, 1920, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2013. Predeceased by his parents, Albert and Daisy, and his brother Delmar. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mabel. Loving father of daughter Linda Jack, and son David (Lori). Norman will be greatly missed by his two grandchildren Arlan Jack (Joanne), Christie Folk, and his three great-grandchildren Nicholas, Tyler, and Maegan Folk. Norman grew up in Murrayville and attended Murrayville Elementary School and Langley High School. After attending Vancouver Normal School he started his teaching career at Fort Langley Elementary School in 1940. Norman spent the next 3 1/2 years in the Canadian Army as a Gunnery Instructor for the Royal Canadian Artillery in Brandon and Shilo, Manitoba. Following graduation from U.B.C in 1947, Norman renewed his teaching career in Langley as a teacher, and later, vice principal of Langley Secondary School for 21 years; and 11 years as principal of Aldergrove Secondary School. Norman retired in 1980 after a 40 year association with the Langley School Board. Norman was active in the community. In 1953 he organized the Lower Fraser Valley Cerebral Palsy Association (The Centre for Child Development) and was on its Board of Directors for 40 years. In 1954 he started the Langley Scholarship Committee and served as its chairman for 21 years. In his 33 years of retirement Norman pursued his two hobbies, travelling and local history. He and Mabel went on several cruises as well as travelling in the fifth wheel with family and friends. They also spent many happy times at their summer home on Mayne Island and their camping lot at Whatcom Meadows in the USA. Norman became an avid researcher of Langley and Surrey history and wrote many articles and made many presentations on the history of the two communities. Norman was named the H.D.Stafford Citizen of the year in Langley City in 1998, and in 1992 received a Canada 125 medal for community service in Surrey. In 2005 he was named an "Honorary Pioneer" of Langley Municipality. Norman was currently a member of the Langley Heritage Society, the Surrey Historical Society, the Langley Retired Teachers Association, the Cloverdale Seniors Camping Group, as well as several Railway Historical Societies. Norman was a well respected educator and will be fondly remembered by hundreds of graduates of Langley and Aldergrove Secondary Schools, whose reunions he always attended. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Langley Scholarship Committee in the name of "N.A.Sherritt Trust", c/o Mrs. M. Pepin 25323 12th Ave, Aldergrove BC V4W 3N2, or to the Centre for Child Development, attn. N.A.Sherritt, 9460 140th St., Surrey BC V3V 5Z4. Chrisie What a legacy your grandfather left. He was loved and respected by all who connected with him. His teachings will be passed on. What a tribute to this wonderful man. OPal-Principal-Stein Valley Nlakapamux School.

A wonderful teacher! My sentiments despite the fact that I am sure I often gave him a hard time about learning all those grammar rules. As I got older and a little more mature, I came to understand how he was trying to help us understand the beauty of the English language. For this I will forever be grateful.

Norm Sherritt was an excellent teacher. He taught me English for four years and gave me a grounding that stood me well in my later career. I was glad to be able to tell him that and thank him for it at our reunions. He always remembered me, even 50 years after I was his student. A great man, a great leader, a great example to us all.

I attended Langley Secondary, then worked as a secretary in the office. Mr. Sherritt was vice-principal at the time. He was well-liked by both students and staff. I will always have good memories of working under him. My sincerest sympathy to family members for their great loss.

I began my teaching career in 1963 at Langley Secondary. Norm was so supportive and encouraging. He was without a doubt the best administrator in my entire teaching career.

From September 1949 to June 1955 at Langley Jr-Sr High School (LSS) Mr Sherritt did his best to impart to us the beauty and strange middle English verbiage of Shakespeare. His legacy to me is a love of literature and the English Language. I have always addressed you as Mr Sherritt but I take the liberty of saying - Rest In Peace "Norm" My never-to-be-forgotten educator.
