I only met Norman two times. He was a dear friend of my father in law going back to their days in the theater at Valparaiso University. He was a generous and kind man. For years he donated to the Valparaiso Boys and Girls Club in memory of my father in law. He gave a very generous gift at my bequest to help the Valpo Parks purchase Jesse Pifer Park. I have thought of him over the years and am saddened to learn that he passed away. He lived a very full life to be very proud of. I'm grateful for him. Christa Emerson, Valparaiso IN

My father was indeed a giant of a businessman and a champion of elder care and nursing, but he was also so much more. He had the amazing combination of an unrelenting work ethic, joie de vivre, generosity of spirit, and deep intelligence that few possess. He was the most fun and interesting person I knew. He loved Broadway, the ballet, art, classical music, vesper services, and being a member and soloist of The University Glee Club for over 40 years. His love of sports ran just as deep. He remained loyal to his beloved Green Bay Packers and loved the New York Cosmos and World Cup soccer, but perhaps his favorite was the two weeks straddling Labor Day where - since the 1970´s - he sat in his box seat watching The US Open tennis tournament. He loved getting sun on his face, a glass of Chardonnay, jelly donuts and above all, cheeseburgers. He adored his four grandchildren, delighted in their success and enjoyed their friends; he is still remembered for being the many years´ running life of the party at The University of Pennsylvania´s St. A´s homecoming bash. In his last 14 months of life, he was met with things he had never known before: immobility and dependency on others. While I will miss his physical presence every day, I am glad he is free. I love you, Dad. Until we meet again -

A champion of older adults, of geriatricians, of nurses, and a leader in philanthropy, Norm helped create a better world for all of us as we age. May his legacy carry on through continued work of the many organizations and causes he led and supported.
