Norris Arthur Elliott

Elliott, Norris Arthur, of Lyndonville, VT passed away at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH on Saturday June 28, 2003

Norris was 72 years old. He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on April 25, 1931, the son of Arthur & Cora Louise Elliott.

Norris enjoyed flying and at age 14 flew solo flights over their home in Bradford, VT. Later he had a senior pilot’s license and flew for a brief period out of Caledonia Airport.

After graduating from UVM he returned to Lyndon where he operated a small dairy farm, but soon became a biology and vocational tech teacher at Lyndon Institute. While teaching he also started a number of businesses including a poultry farm (1957), a summer catering service featuring chicken barbecues, and in 1964 a small greenhouse was erected at the current site of Elliott’s Greenhouses on Route 122.

His career changes after teaching included a position at Lyndon Institute and then a tricounty extension agent for UVM’s Extension Service. After earning his MBA from UVM he moved to Burlington to become the Vermont Small Business Development Center Director. His love of horticulture kept him busy. During this period he also built and operated a retail garden center on Rte 100 in Stowe. After retiring from UVM he built a greenhouse near Bradenton, Florida where he specialized in propagation of geraniums (the same crops his parent’s grew in the original greenhouse located on 170 Dandelion Lane in Lyndon). Last spring he grew over 50,000 geraniums for the Lyndon garden center.

Returning north every summer, Norris helped his son Steven and daughter-in-law Carolyn expand the garden center in Lyndon Center. They have extensive plans for continued growth and community service for their garden-center-to continue on in Norris’ tradition. Staff and customers always enjoyed seeing him there for his knowledge and keen wit.

Norris served on the Board of Director’s of the Northern Community Investment Corp. for years. Other local services included the Lyndon Outing Club, Future Farmer’s of America and Trustee of Lyndon Institute.

He is survived by two sons, Steven of Lyndon, and Richard of Fair Haven, Mass. Richard works in the U.S.C.G. Marine Safety Office in Newport, R.I. Daughters-in-law Carolyn and Ann Marie. Grandchildren Mickaela and Hillary (Steven & Carolyn) and Bryan and Kimberly (Richard & Ann Marie). Companion Karlene Smith of Glover, VT and Parrish, FL. Norris’ sister Connie Simpson predeceased him.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Lyndon Institute for the Reconstruction and landscaping of the vocational campus. Please contact Steven Elliott @ 802-626-3634. As of this writing the family plans to have a memorial service at the family farm in Lyndon with reception following on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. on July 55, 2003. Further details will follow in the Caledonian-Record or by calling the funeral home @ 802-626-5600.

Stephen and Richard, I was very sad to hear of your dad's passing. I met him many years ago, when he lived at the Lake in Burlington. He was gentle and kind, but so full of dry humor, and wonderful knowledge, always willing to listen and share his wisdom. I followed his greenhouse business ventures with keen interest and pleasure. I have memories of seeing the Florida Greenhouse full of beautiful - colorful geraniums in all stages of growth. When I retired from "Bell" and moved to Colorado, a part of me was left among those greenhouses. Whenever I look at flowers, I think of him, and always will. He was a genuine person, and those whose lives he touched were very fortunate.

To the family of Norris: we were shocked and saddened when we received the news of his passing. Norris rented an apartment from me on Lake Champlain, "babysat" for my two teens, shared sunsets and swimming, meals, conversations and laughs. He also provided boxes of flowers for my second marriage. We socialized again when he made his move to Bradenton. He was a gentleman among men and our loss is great. How fortunate the many lives he touched by just being Norris.

I met Norris at Ann and Rick's wedding and just loved him. What a wonderful personality. I wish my husband had a chance to meet him as I know he would have enjoyed his company.

My first four years in UVM Extension were spent working with Norris in the Small Business Development Center State Office in Morrill Hall.

At some point during the course of each day, Norris would share either an anecedote (there were many!) or a piece of wisdom. I learned a great deal from him during those four years, and he became both a friend and mentor. One piece of advice that stays with me is "a little good will goes a long way." It is a principle that I have passed on to my own children, but I've never forgotten from whom it came.

Family was very important to him -- he spoke of you daily and took great pride in your achievements. Please accept my most sincere condolences.

My condolences to the family of Norris Elliott. I enjoyed working with Norris and his family over the past eight years. Norris was a very hard worker and always enjoyable to work with and be around. I am glad that he was able to spend the last weeks of his life at his farm with Carolyn, Steve, Hillary, Mickaela, Jude and Largo. They brought him much happiness.

Steve and Family,
Jim and I have real fond memories of Norris. Working with him on the Garden Center at Stowe in 1986 was the greatest. He was a super man with am unreal sense of humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. He's in a happier place now, making the angles laugh.

So sorry to hear about Norris. Last fall at the LI Coporators' Meeting I had a nice conversation with him. It had been many years since we last met. He was my General Science teacher at LI in the late 1950's. Later, I worked for awhile grading and packing eggs for him. He was always such a nice, pleasant person to be around. I still think of some of the jokes he told during General Science class.
