1949 - 2012
Former Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil- Soulanges and former Mayor of the Town of Kirkland, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Nick devoted his life to his family and friends and treated none as a stranger. He leaves behind his wife and love of over 43 years, Mary Alice (Chambers), his four children, Lisa (Marc Price) of Toronto, Laura (Daniele Vassallo) of Toronto, Michele (Andrea Webb) of Singapore and Marco of Montreal. His adoring grandchildren, Chiara, Gianluca and Natalya, will forever have a guardian angel watching over them. He is also survived by his mother Immacolata Discepola (Stoppiello) and brother Marino (Josie). He was predeceased by his father Domenico. He will always remain "Zio" to his many nieces and nephews. His family thanks all those who were involved with his care, especially Dr. Malcolm Moore, Laura Lancaster, Dr. Julia Ridley, Ariana Lopez, Dr. Subrata Banarjee and all the nurse-angels who cared for him while in palliative care. He was elected Mayor of Kirkland in 1989 and served until 1993 when he was first elected as a Member of Parliament. He was re-elected twice and served until 2004. He was deeply committed to his beloved country and was determined for Canada to remain the envy of many nations. Visitation will take place at Centre funéraire Côte-Des-Neiges, 4525 Côte-des- Neiges, Montreal, Saturday and Sunday, November 24-25, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to be held on Monday, November 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Brendan Church, 3542 Rosemont Boulevard, Montreal. Burial to follow at the Notre-Dame- des-Neiges Cemetery. I was very saddened to recently hear of Nick's passing. Nick and I were in the House of Commons together during our first time in office. I had the pleasure of being on a parliamentary trip to Japan with you and Nick and enjoyed both your company and his. George, Renee, Heather & Holly Stachovskis fondly remember Nunzio (Nick) Discepola during the time we lived in Kirkland, from 1983 to 1996, where he proudly represented us as Mayor. We were honoured to call Nick a Friend.
I was proud of the small part I played working with Nick and his election committee to help him win his first campaign as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil.
I also recall the enjoyment of competing against Nick in the Kirkland Men's Slo-Pitch League.
We regret losing contact with Nick & his family when my work took our family to Arizona for 12 years until 2008.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Nick's wife, Mary Alice, to all of their children and to all of the extended family.
You were a great competitor in everything you did, Nick! It goes without saying that you will be sorely missed!

Quoi que nous fûmes toujours à jour au sujet de l'évolution de la bataille médicale du feu votre cher père, beau-père et grand père par les courriels de Lisa, c'est sans doute avec consternation que nous avons appris son départ dans l'au-delà . La lecture de cette dure épreuve avec les lunettes humaines nous laissera tous désorientés et blessés au plus profond de nous-mêmes. Voilà pourquoi, il nous faudra appréhender cette réalité plutôt avec les lunettes de la foi. En effet, notre tradition chrétienne nous a toujours appris que c'est Le Très Haut qui donne et c'est aussi Lui qui reprend, selon son propre agenda, ce qu'Il nous donne gratuitement. I was so saddened to hear the news that Nick had passed away. I have such fond memories of Nick when we served together in the House of Commons. He was a very hard working and respected member of the Liberal caucus and government. It was a great honour and privilege for me to have served with him. I am so sorry to hear about Nunzio's passing..Lots of memories come flooding back about the times we spent in Montreal with Zia, Zio, Marino & Nunzio. I remember we were visiting and laughing away and Nunzio was laying on the couch with his mouth open and eyes closed and we put fish food in his mouth and laughed and laughed. He didnt think it was so funny at first then he started to laugh to...You will all miss him terribly but keep his memories in your heart and he will always be with you. Dear Mary Alice and family,
A pain no one should have to endure. I was deeply saddened to hear about Nick's passing. I was so happy to run into him at Linguinie's last year. We had a great catch-up. It also hurt my heart as I could see he was not a well man. He was a great friend to Steve ,and was there for him when he was dying. I know from experience what you have all been through,and are going through, and am deeply sorry for that. I think of you often as in my office I have a photo of you, Nick, Steve and I cutting the ribbon for the community centre in Hudson. He was such a great help in the realization of that dream,and many more over the years. I wish you and your family strength and courage. My prayers are with you all.

We shared many days together in the House of Commons as seat mates; in fact one day we wore identical ties and had our picture taken which is framed in my office(the good taste he acknowledged as Mary Alice's).We also shared the joys and challenges as newly elected MP's,but his greatest joys were always the pride he glowed with when talking about Mary Alice and the kids,a great friend. I first met Nick when he was a councillor in Kirkland. We worked on the beautification committee of Kirkland. He was a devoted family and community man. He went on and became mayor and then elected in Ottawa. Always a nice person. This is very sad news. My condolecences to Mary Alice and the family.
