PISTAKEE HIGHLANDS - Vernon Ralph Opsal, 87, of Pistakee Highlands, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at his home, with family by his side.

He was born at home Jan. 26, 1921, in Verona, Wis.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 18, 1940. He became a surgical technician in the eye, ear, nose, and throat clinic while stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.

During his 39 months of service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, The Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, a Service Strip and five Overseas Bars.

In his own words, "I have worked all my life doing one thing or another, but probably the most important reason is my children.

"Every hour spent working was to make things better for my kids than I had it. There is no greater reward in life than to see your kids self-supporting, independent, and raising families of their own.

"I have never been prouder of my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren than I am now.

"I love all of you and always have."

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lorraine Mary Dallman.

At the time of his death, he resided with his wife in their home in Pistakee Highlands.

He was loving father to Ralph (Carol), JoAnn (Jeff) Clink, Arlene (Mick) Stahl, Vivian (Peter) Douglas, William (Maggie), Robert (JoAnn) and Richard (Janice); dear grandfather of Kelly (Brian) Darnell, Laura (Robert) Butler, Michelle (Rob) Belline, Melissa Nielsen, Angela (David) Fritz, Jennifer (Gary) Discher, Wendy Sikorski, Kimberly (Matthew) Christian, Jason Opsal, Brian (Jacky) Opsal, Carrie (Timothy) Jacobs, Sean Opsal, John Lorenzi, Tina (Christopher) Stern, Joshua Opsal, Kristin Opsal, Michael Opsal, James Opsal, Rebecca Dulay and Adam Opsal; and great-grandfather of Ashley, Reagan, Bailey, Riley, Alexandra, Angelina, Korbi, Seth, Sarah, Alexandria, Eli, Oliver, Kaleb, Caiden, Timothy, Drew, Morgan, Cheyenne, Tyler, Delaney, Ashton, Caedan and Brayden.

He also is survived by his brothers, Boyd (Sybilla) and Eugene; his sister-in-law, Rubelle Opsal Zwald; his brother-in-law, Joseph (Betty) Dallman; 15 nieces and nephews; and 31 great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Bert and Ella Mae Opsal; his sister, Lola (Lester) Shore; his brothers, Leland Simon and Dale Gordon; and a great-nephew, Thad Opsal.

The visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the funeral at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Kisselburg-Wauconda Funeral Home, 235 N. Main St., Wauconda.

Inurnment will be in North Side Cemetery in Mount Horeb, Wis.
