MOUNT CARMEL - Henry Francis Federowicz, 87, of 345 W. Fifth St., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at Serenity Gardens, Den Mar Gardens, Kulpmont, following a brief illness.
Born in his residence in Mount Carmel on Jan. 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Adam and Victoria (Kowaleski) Federowicz. On March 2, 1946, in St. Casimir's Church, Kulpmont, he married the former Genevieve D. Kadyszewski, who preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2007.
He attended Mother of Consolation Grade School, Mount Carmel, and graduated in 1938 from Mount Carmel High School. He earned certification in diesel mechanics at Diesel Mechanics Trade School in Williamsport.
Henry served with the Navy during World War II and earned the rank of motor machinist's mate first class. He enlisted Oct. 22, 1942, and was discharged Feb. 15,1946, having received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. Henry survived the sinking of the USS Bristol DD453 on Oct. 13, 1945, off the coast of Algiers in the Mediterranean Sea during the invasion of Sicily.
He was a lifelong resident of the Mount Carmel area and worked as a shop foreman diesel mechanic for Cummins Diesel of Ashland.
Henry was a former member of Our Mother of Consolation Church, now Divine Redeemer Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 91, VFW Post 2110, all of Mount Carmel; Disabled American Veterans, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Mount Carmel Senior Action Center, the Rosary Society and Tin Can Saylors. He was a volunteer for many years with the local veteran honor guards and served as past commander and chaplain of the Mount Carmel American Legion Post 91 and past chaplain for the Mount Carmel VFW Post 2110. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at the local voting polls during elections.
Henry enjoyed fishing, tinkering, woodworking and hosting friends and family at his beloved Juniata River Camp in Perry County.
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cynthia and Martin Veneski of Coal Township, Catherine and Ronald Bonadonna of Nutley, N.J., and Stephanie Federowicz of Columbia; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas Federowicz of Duncannon, and Henry and Susan Federowicz, Jr. of Mount Joy; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Havay of Elysburg, Marc Havay of Bloomsburg, Molly and Kathryn Federowicz, both of Baltimore, Md., Emily Federowicz of State College, Melissa Federowicz of Studio City, Calif., and Susannah Federowicz of Austin, Texas; a sister, Victoria Pluta of Jenkintown; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Federowicz; five brothers, Benjamin, Felix and John Gwazdowski and Edward and Anthony Swiacki; and two sisters, Mildred and Bertha Swiacki.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a Christian Wake service at 8 p.m. and from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Thursday at the C.J. Lucas Funeral Home, Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mount Carmel. A funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 W. Avenue, Mount Carmel with Rev. Robert Yohe, officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lebanon Veterans Medical Center, 1700 S. Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, PA 17042, or Divine Redeemer Church, 438 W. Avenue, Mount Carmel, PA 17851.
