Charles G. Penn, Jr. Charles G. Penn, Jr., "Junebug" to family and close friends, died on Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Lakewood, Washington. Born on October 9, 1966 to Charles and Lena Penn of Wytheville, Virginia, Charles graduated from George Wythe High School, where he excelled in academics and was enshrined in the school's basketball Hall of Fame. He served twelve years in the US Army, and completed tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan, Texas, Germany, and Fort Lewis. Charles also worked for the State of Washington. He held positions at the McNeil Island Special Commitment Center, the Division of Child Support, and the Lakewood Community Service Office. In partnership with his wife of sixteen years, Jamilyn "Hinton" Penn, Charles was a loving and dedicated parent to his sons, Kelvin, age 16, and Jalen, age 14. He adored them. Charles was a wonderful friend to so many people. It has been said that from the first moment you met Charles you felt as if you had known him all your life. He was such a kind, patient and gentle spirit with a wonderful sense of humor. The world is a much better place because he was in it. His funeral is on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Wytheville, Virginia. Friends and family on the west coast will gather for a celebration of his life on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 11:00 to 3:00 at the Steilacoom Community Center, 2301 Worthington St., Steilacoom, WA 98388.

Jayme, Kelvin and family,
We are so shocked and saddened by your loss and the loss of everyone whose lives he touched. We met all of you thru basketball when Marcus and Kelvin played together on "Armed Forces". It is true.. when you met Charles you knew instantly what kind of a man he was. It is evident in you all as a family too. We will miss his smile when we greeted each other at basketball tournaments. We didn't hear about his passing until this past Saturday or we would have surely been at the memorial. Keep all the great memories close to your hearts. God will surely watch over you.
Sincerely,
Angela Edwards and family

To Charles' family and many friends ~ Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Charles and I started working together in Fife when I was pregnant with my daughter. No matter how busy he was or what was happening he always had time for a smile and a kind word. When I returned from maternity leave every time our paths crossed his face would light up and he'd ask me how my little girl was doing. He would tell me what a blessing babies are and how proud he was of his kids. The joy he felt in being their dad was obvious by the incredible glowing smile on his face every time he talked about them.

Charles was one of the most sincere and genuine people I have ever met and I, like so many others who have signed in here, feel incredibly blessed to have shared some small part of his life.

I wish his family strength and peace in the days and months ahead.

I remember the smiles that Charles would give to each and every staff here at the SCC. There was never a day that went by without a smile from him. He truly was an inspiration to me on how happy someone could be no matter what kind of crises was happening. I have never met anyone like Charles and I feel blessed that I had a chance to know and talk to him here at work or seeing him in a parking lot always with a smile. Thanks for being you.

My heart is with you at this very difficult time. I knew Junebug from High School. I looked at him, because of his athletic skills. My thoughts go to Charles' family during this difficult time. He was such a warm and gentle soul. His smile lit up anywhere he happened to be. He will be deeply missed. I worked with him at the SCC and he was a huge help to me when I first started. I looked to him for guidance and to add a ray of sunshine to my day. He was not here on this earth long enough for him to spread that wonderful smile to others. It is amazing that one man could touch so many lives in the way that Charles did and leave such sadness to so many after he has gone.

My heart and soul goes out to the Penn family during this difficult period. Junebug was my fellow classmate and Army vet and I loved him just like I would my own brothers.

Junebug always was polite and fun to be with and even though he was one of the top athletes at our school you would not had known it from the way he interacted with everyone.

I remember that Junebug always had a smile on his face that could light up a room but when he was on the basketball court he had the heart of a lion. I can still remember when GW played Radford in the regional championship game Junebug helped get GW to the state and we rushed the court at the Dedmon Center after the horn blew for at that time one of the biggest wins in our school's history.

May the hearts of the Penn family and friends soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times we had with Junebug together as we celebrate a life well lived.
