He served with the 187th Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division and was a decorated combat veteran of the Korean War. Among his many military awards were three Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. After being wounded in combat operations, he was promoted to Sergeant and served in an intelligence unit based in Japan. After his military service, he returned to Tennessee. In 1982, he moved to Tyler, Texas and pursued his life's love for tractors by working for American Ford Tractor. He retired in 1994. Mr. Greathouse was very active in amateur radio. He was one of the founders of the Tyler Amateur Radio Club. His call sign was "Kb5mvp." He also loved flying model airplanes and fishing on Tyler Lake in his boat. It isn't easy for us to say goodbye. I feel that while we mourn our loss - people on the other side rejoice in his arrival - like the birth of a baby for us. I trust that James and my dad were there with mischievous grins waiting with open arms. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I lit a candle for James, Bruce and my dad today as well as another one for all of us. May we all be at peace as Bruce moves into a higher level of being. All my love!

So sorry to hear about the passing of Bruce. I have so many fond memories of him but the one that sticks out today was when he stopped by our house with his patrol car and I was so excited to see all the cool stuff inside. I asked him how fast the car would go because the speedometer said 160 and his response in his cool laid back way was...it don't matter how fast my car will go cause you can't beat the radio...Rest in Peace Bruce. Say hello to James for me.

I am very sorry for your loss. When I first arrived in Geauga county as the new OSP Commander in 1978 Bruce was the first person I met. He made sure to introduce me to all those in the justice system & public office holders.Something he did not have to do. That is the way Bruce was.Always ready to help & give of himself. I will always fondly remember my time in Geauga because of the people like Bruce .Capt.Charlie Miner OSP Retired.

I worked with Bruce for 4 yrs. at GCSO. One of his greatest qualities was his laid back demeanor and shooting right from the hip. You always knew where you stood with Sarge. I learned allot from Bruce, mostly about people and how they tick. I felt honored and fortunate to have served with a good street cop.
