Dennis F. "Denny" O'Connor, 64, of Asylum Twp., Pa., passed away Sunday morning, April 17, 2011 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.

"Denny" as he was known by his family and many friends was born Nov. 18, 1946 in Sayre, Pa., one of 17 children of the late Paul A. O'Connor and Anna Laura Cole O'Connor. He was a graduate of Wyalusing High School class of 1964 and following high school became employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda. Denny was later called to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. Following completion of his military service, Denny returned home to work at GTE Sylvania in Towanda where he remained until his retirement on May 1, 2001. Denny enjoyed working, hunting and racing. He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 and the Towanda Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia "Ginger" Johnson O'Connor, whom he married on June 3, 1972 at the Wysox Presbyterian Church; daughter, Wendy Gerrity and husband Michael of Abingdon, Md.; brothers, Jonathan L. "Louie" O'Connor and his wife, Joan of Wyalusing RR3, Clair M. O'Connor and his wife, Jung Ja of Wyalusing RR3, Kenneth O'Connor and his wife, Beverly of Wyalusing; sisters, Diane M. Landmesser and her husband, Robert of Towanda, Sharon Force and her husband, Burton of Lawton, Pa., Alice Bensavage and her husband, George of Hyndman, Pa., Laura Hiduk and her husband, Tom of Wyalusing RR3, Sally Miller and her husband, George of Rome, Dorothy Boatman and her husband, Bruce of Herrickville, Marilyn Bailey of Factoryville, Bonnie O'Connor of the Phillipines, Ruth DeLamarter of Stevensville; sisters-in-law, Janet Chilson of Endicott, N.Y., Allyson O'Connor of Pittsburgh, Pa., Barbara O'Connor of Illinois, mother-in-law, Gladys P. Derr of Durell, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jug and Julie Johnson of Durell, Wayne and Sue Johnson of Asylum Twp., Tom and Sandy Johnson of Macedonia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sheila and George Evans of East Towanda; foster sister-in-law, Valerie DiVenti of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul A. O'Connor in July of 1981; mother, Anna Laura Cole O'Connor in October of 2010; brothers, Paul, Nick, Terry and Howard O'Connor.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., with Rev. Robert Martin and his nephew, Mr. Edward O'Connor officiating.

Interment will follow in the Wysox Cemetery, Wysox, Pa., with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Bradford Unit, 1948 East Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945 or to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O. Box 179, Ulster, PA 18850 in Dennis F. O'Connor's memory.
