Odea Paul Moreau

I am so so very saddened to read this news. Mr. Moreau has always been and always be my favorite teacher. He taught us so much about the world and the universe at Burbank. He taught us we could be anything and anyone we wanted to be. I will always remember the class trip we took to Point Reyes. I´m sorry for your loss. And the world has lost a wonderful man.

Simply put, I loved Mr. Moreau, as he signified a deep elegance and depth of spirit and soul I needed as a LBHS student in the ACADEMY OF MATH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. I was a part of the inaugural class, in 1987, and held on barely, and would not have done so without the generous mentorship and patience of Mr. Moreau. Not so simply put, the indelible memory of this brilliant, kind and warm thinker propelled me to keep on thinking in wild and inventive ways from the magic of his classes, Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, in a "school within a school," where I was able to meet so many interesting and odd, confident, brainy, nerdy, eccentric kids, and somehow, we were all pushed to be ourselves. I wasn't the best student (or the nicest!) but no matter what, I never felt that I wasn't as bright as I needed to be. Mr. Moreau always encouraged us that we were special, and many of us Academy kids lived in a South Sac, then, that could have dimmed our dreams, as not all of us Sacra kids had great home lives, but I did, and having great parents and great, dedicated teachers in the Academy was pure luck, and gold! But still, to Mr. Moreau, I returned for so many years on and off, checking in, when I was a student at CRC, then CAL and then I went on to grow into my own work, and world in NY where I did my grad work at NYU and CUNY Grad and taught on the east coast for two decades. I am so thankful that in 2018, I reached out to Mr. Moreau, by phone, and he remembered me! And he mused about climate change, and science, the world he described in his own vivid brilliance, transfixing. Magic. Curiosity. So full with life! I sent him some of my books soon after -- I am now an established poet, artist, and Professor in CA-- and he wrote back, and he let me know of his goings on, spoke beautifully of his wife, travels, and health. I was so happy to let him know just how much he impacted my life. He bought my books, and even attended an online art opening and performance I had in Brooklyn in 2020! I was blown away at his enduring care and attention. But this should not have come as a surprise. Mr. Moreau was always so genuinely thoughtful, sharp of mind, elegant, and just so down to earth -- he would even help us when we had car trouble as recent Academy Grads, and were in the neighborhood; and the truth is, none of us ever strayed too far from LBHS, the Academy, and the kindness and grace that he radiated, and continues to share through his legacy of spirit, and powerful teacher of science and life and science as life. My sincere condolences to his family, what a great loss, but a forever wonderful human being -- Mr. Moreau -- I know he will live on in his students, forever, including in this one.

Paul Moreau was one of the academic Visionaries behind the Luther Burbank High School Academy of Math Science and Engineering. Decades before the charter school movement,home schooling,and advance placement exams for every student, SCUSD pioneered the school within a school STEM program. I deeply needed a program like this as a kid and would have ended up in a very different place in life had he not advocated for me. He was a part of a team that delivered world-class education in a school. Most of the city had written off as hopeless. A greatly appreciate him and I'm saddened to hear of his passing.

If more teachers had the passion for their students success that Mr. Moreau modeled, Sacramento and Sacramentans would be in a dramatically better place.

Praying for your family through this difficult time. Mr. Moreau was an awesome physics teacher.
