Colonel Oliver Charles Stokes Jr., US Army Retired, affectionately known as "Renzy" to his family, passed away on November 27, 2024, at his home in Sierra Vista, AZ. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 15, 1939, to Mary Catherine and Oliver Charles Stokes Sr, he lived a life marked by achievement, service, and dedication to his loved ones.

A gifted student, Oliver graduated as valedictorian from Sollers Point High School in Turner Station, MD, in 1957. He received a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University, where he joined the Army ROTC program and earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1961, graduating as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. He later obtained a master's degree from George Washington University, furthering his commitment to academic and professional excellence.

Huachuca, AZ, Yuma, AZ, Washington, D.C. and Adelphi, MD), where he worked in communications and electronics engineering, intelligence, warfare science and technology, weapons acquisition, and US Army Material Command Research and Development He has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal.

In 1985, he achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first African American commander of the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. He significantly contributed to the Army's testing and development efforts. His last assignment was in Adelphi, MD, as the Director of Target Acquisition for Army Weapons Systems.

Outside of his military service and spending time with his wife, Oliver had a passion for dogs and explored the world of HAM radios. He also enjoyed indulging in photography, fishing, and immersing himself in books.

Oliver leaves behind a legacy of dedication and resilience. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Erescene Johnson-Stokes (March 2, 2019). May memories of him be a blessing. Thank you for your service. You truly embodied the values and integrity of a true role model. Your love and commitment to your family was truly outstanding. Your professionalism was so inspirational, my brother attended John´s Hopkins University and said electrical engineering was the most difficult major. You are deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

I met Oliver when he first visited Sky Island Unitarian Universalist Church. As was my habit when I saw an unaccompanied visitor, I welcomed him and struck up a conversation. When I learned he was new to our denomination, I showed him the page near the front of our hymnal that gives a sense of what I think we are about. From there, our conversation moved to various programs and activities he might find interesting. When he asked a question for which I didn't have an immediate answer, we exchanged phone numbers so I could find the answer and get back to him. Thus began an enjoyable phone friendship as we shared many conversations over the next few weeks.

Oliver was a marvelous story teller. I was fascinated with his experiences in the military. There were many similarities to my experiences as a professional woman in the electronics industry. I like to think he enjoyed hearing my stories as much as I did his.

He once told of arriving to take command at the Yuma Proving Grounds. As he was being shown around, he noticed something amiss. I'm sure he mentioned details that I've since forgotten, but it was something simple, like maybe a loose screw or a loose electrical connection. He did as I might have; he pulled an appropriate tool from his pocket and, within seconds, put it to rights. He was told in no uncertain terms never to do anything like that ever again; that was what he had subordinates for. If anyone has compiled (or ever does compile) Oliver's stories from his illustrative career, I would enjoy reading them.

I got to know Oliver a bit when he attended our UU church in Sierra Vista. But I clearly only knew a tiny bit about his life and am sorry I didn't get to know more about the clearly amazing life he led. I've been missing you at church, Oliver, and now I'll have to quit hoping I'd get to see you again.
