Otis Curling Obituary

Published by Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel on Jul. 3, 2017.
Curling, Otis Delano, Sr. went to be with Jesus on July 2, 2017. Otis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Moore Curling; 3 children, Cynthia Curling Bauer, (Kenneth Myles Bauer); Otis Delano Curling, Jr. (Jan Elizabeth), Kevin Allen Curling (Sarah Carpenter); 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and brothers-in-law Henry Wilson Guill and William George Moore, Jr. Otis also enjoyed time with his cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Otis Curling was born in South Norfolk, Va. on May 6, 1933 to Lewis Linwood and Mary Morse Curling. He served in the U.S. Marines until 1959 and then began his 39+ year career with the telephone company, retiring from Verizon on December 28, 1991 at age 58. He also enjoyed many years working with his family to develop New Point Campground in Matthews, VA.

Otis served as a deacon at Monument Heights and Bon Air Baptist churches and worked with the Royal Ambassadors at Bon Air and Ravensworth in Annandale, Va. Otis's greatest joy was spending time and money on his grand and great grand children (especially on sweets that the parents may not have always appreciated).

The family will receive friends at Woody Huguenot Chapel on Sunday, July 9th, 2017 from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Monday, July 10th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by burial with military honors at Dale Memorial Park at 11 a.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Bon Air Baptist at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Offering through Bon Air Baptist Church.

One couldn't ask for a better neighbor.
Always helpful, always making sure everyone was safe and always a pleasure to talk to.
Can't thank him enough for putting up with me and my teenage pals, watching out for my mom & brother and just being a great guy.
He often had a sly smile going on that was infectious. I continually remember our last visit and thankful he came to my wife's funeral. He is missed.

Our family spent many wonderful times at Newpoint Campground with the Neagle's and others. These are some of my best childhood memories. From our family to yours, our thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time. With love,

Only had the privilege of meeting this gentleman one time. We had a great conversation during his Granddaughter Mary's baby shower. Sorry for the family's loss and prayers go out to them.
