Otto STEINER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Dec. 14 to Dec. 16, 2011.
STEINER, Otto
November 19, 1927 - December 12, 2011
Otto Steiner, beloved husband of Claudia Steiner of Calgary, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2011 at the age of 84 years. Otto Steiner was born November 19, 1927 in Rieden, Switzerland. He immigrated by boat and by train to Calgary, Canada. His wife Claudia and children Reto and Angela followed in November of the same year. Calgary became home for the family. He came to Canada with $500.00 and spoke no English. He dug up all the strawberries, which he thought were weeds, as a result the job only lasted a day. Otto started his own company Superior Components, a cabinet making business. Atco bought Superior, and Otto became a part of the Atco family. He retired from Atco and then went on to build Woodside Golf Course in Airdrie, AB which opened in 1989. Golfing and skiing were Otto's passion. Heli skiing at 80 with his son Reto, and three hole in ones were highlights of his life. He was always early and never late. Otto and Claudia went to Hawaii every Christmas Holiday, and never missed a day of golf. He did a lot of wood carvings and woodwork right up until two months ago, he never quit using his hands. Otto loved a good wager, and was always happy to win a dollar. He taught his children that anything is possible and lived by that motto. Otto is survived by his wife Claudia and children Reto (Julie) and Angela (Mike); grandson Brodie and granddaughter Jesse. He is also survived by his niece Irma (Franz); and great-niece Nancy (Jason); great-great-nephews Eli and Owen. Otto is also survived by numerous relatives in Switzerland. A Celebration of Otto's Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) today, December 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . Donations are accepted to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8 (Telephone 403-955-8818). In living memory of Otto Steiner, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.

To Claudia, Reto, Angela and family, My sincere condolences. Every time we met he would have a smile, a hand shake and of course a small wager on something. I will miss him.

To Claudia, Reto, Angela and family, My sincere condolences on the loss of a very generous, successful and kind man. I have always enjoyed Otto's company, his wit and smile, whenever we had a chance to talk, mostly at a Swiss function. I'll miss him. Unfortunately I will only be able to be with you in thought on Friday, as I am spending my winters in Arizona.

We all will miss Otto. I met Otto when he joined with us to build both care centres in Airdrie and Cochrane. Without his skill and imput we would not have been able to provide for years and years of care for so many seniors and disabled. Not many leave such a mark.

Our thoughts are with you,

Bob and Phyllis Wardle

Claudia;

Our condolences to you and your family on the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

I fondly remember the many golf games and visits we shared on Maui and often paying up the Otto invented wagers following each game.

We proudly display in our home the wood carving of a Loon that Otto did for us.

We are in Arizona so unable to join you in the celebration of Otto's life on December 16th but our thoughts are with you.
