One of my favorite (and most terrifying) memories of Owen was back when I lived in Fort Hood and had all the kids over for a birthday party. We were playing hide and seek, and Owen was so little at the time I honestly didn´t think he´d even join in. Well... not only did he join - he committed. When the game ended and all the kids were accounted for except Owen, concern turned to full-on panic. We searched everywhere. My soldier buddies fanned out across the neighborhood, Robyn was on the phone with the MPs, and I was already rehearsing the impossible conversation I´d have to have with Kevin and Noelle about how I somehow lost their child. Just as I was about to start driving around, I opened my car door - and there he was, curled up silently on the floorboard of the driver´s side, proud as ever. Owen didn´t just play hide and seek - he won. That moment says everything about him: bold, clever, and absolutely fearless. He scared the hell out of me that day... and I loved him for it.
