We met the good doctor when my husband was admitted to Shadyside Hospital for a collapsed lung. He came in with his 50 keys hanging on his scrubs and deftly took over Jim's care. He was a real treasure and a wonderful doctor. So very sorry for your loss.

Maggie,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. I met you when you and I were roommates at Allegheny General Hospital when I had my son and you had Paul. So many years ago, but good memories.
Hope all is well with you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Pablo was a kind, jovial human being. I was starting practice as a thoracic attending in 1991. He would give me occassional pointers regarding surgical practice. He was a wonderful colleague and a great person. God bless him.

I was a student back when I met him. Always loved his visits and he always seemed to really care about his patients, but the one thing that stuck out in my mind and that this obituary doesn't mention is what a great artist he was! He always carried this huge Day Planner in his pocket and the one day he whips it out and shows me this drawing he did in med school of a heart and it was just beautiful! Wished I had taken a pic of it, but this was back before smart phones were around. I feel very blessed to have known him for the short time before he retired. Definitely missed seeing him around!

Pablo was one of the first doctors I ever met at Shadyside Hospital! When I was 12 years old, my mom brought me into her office at work and Pablo would come visit me and give me gum from his fanny pack! He had everything in that fanny pack! While working with him in the CTICU he always made me and ALL his patients laugh! He is a true legend! What he brought to the medical field can not be taught! He was truly the funniest, most caring, and talented doctors I've ever known! Prayers to his beautiful family!

Pablo was a soft spoken, compassionate, approachable, and self deprecating man...A rare breed among the highly educated in the medical community... As a student in 1981 I watched one of his OR cases. He had us students guess what nationality we thought he was, it was hilarious. He knew how to put people as ease... I worked nights for many years, and you would hear his keys before you would see him, one of his many trade marks...As a colleague I was privileged to have known and worked with him. His family was blessed to have him...One of the good guys in the world.

One of my favorite physicians while working many years in
CT ICU. Remember Pablo with his fanny pack and massive, jingling key chain. I was, literally, just talking about him, yesterday. My condolences to his family. Bea Coyne RN (retired) Shadyside Hospital

Absolutely one of my favorite people of all time as well as favorite surgeons. You were greatly missed when you retired. I worked with him as a RN in CTICU at Shadyside as well as a CRNA. I have never met a more caring ,hardworking , talented surgeon in all my years. Rest In Peace with the angels Pab you deserve it.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr Hong-Barco was a remarkable physician. His patients so loved him as did the nurses. I so remember him making rounds at all hours when I worked on 3 Main back from 1981-1983. May he rest in peace.
