PASTOR JAMES HINKLE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2020.

April 8, 1939 – May 11, 2020

James J. Hinkle, age 81, went home to be with his Savior on Monday, May 11, 2020.  James, affectionately known to most as “Brother Hinkle” or “Brother Jimmy” was born to William and Lydia Hinkle on April 8, 1939, in Weatherly, Pennsylvania.  He and his 7 brothers and 2 sisters were raised in a home with limited material possessions but rich in love.  As a teenager he was deeply moved by the martyrdom of Jim Elliot and his four missionary companions in the jungles of Ecuador in January of 1956.  The words etched in Elliot’s journal burned in James’ heart and soul, “He is no fool, who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” At the age of 17, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior giving birth to a relationship that guided and motivated his life for the next sixty-four years.  Not long after his conversion, he felt God’s call into the ministry.

After moving to Florida, he met his life-long love, Annette Hogan, in a church parking lot.  He had just finished delivering a sermon, and upon leaving the sanctuary, found that his car had a flat tire.  As he began the arduous task of replacing the tire in the humid Florida summer weather, a young lady and her mother stopped by and invited him to lunch.  Thus began a love story and a marriage that would span sixty-one years.  Over the years, one of James’s favorite pastimes was blaming Annette for flattening his tire in order to reel him in.

After a short stay in his hometown, James and Annette moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he would attend Bible school at Tennessee Temple College.  In 1963, they moved back to Florida where he planted and pastored the Bible Fellowship Church in Vero Beach.  One night, while staying at a Christian camp in Okeechobee, Florida, God gave him a vision of a ranch for needy boys. From the very beginning, he felt that this ministry must be a work of faith without dependence upon fundraising or government subsidy. Although he did not have any idea how this ranch would come to fruition, Jimmy believed and trusted in the promise of Philippians 4:19, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

With only fifty cents in his pocket and a reliance upon the providence of God, James prayed for God’s guidance and will to be done.  Soon, Mrs. Claude Smith called with an offer to donate thirty-one acres of undeveloped land for a boys’ ranch.  On Jimmy’s twenty-sixth birthday in 1965, the corporation papers were signed, and Shiloh Youth Ranch was born.  Over the following fifty-five years, by the miraculous providence of God, the ranch grew to the beautiful fifty-six acre campus it is today and Brother Jimmy served faithfully as director, counsellor, cottage parent, cook, builder, farmer, teacher, maintenance man, and pastor of the Shiloh Tabernacle.

Although our hearts are heavy with our loss, we rejoice in knowing that our beloved husband, father, friend, and faithful servant is in the land of “no more” –no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither any more pain: for the former things are passed away.  He often spoke of the many dear ones with whom he had served and to whom he had ministered who had graduated to glory and were awaiting his arrival.  What a glorious reunion there has been at the gates of heaven!

Brother Jimmy is survived by his wife, Annette, as well as five children and their spouses – Mark & Shelly Hinkle of Sebastian, Florida; Hugh & Rebecca Boike of Sebastian, Florida; John & Sandy Hinkle, of Traverse City, Michigan; Matthew & Sheila Hinkle of Lake Ann, Michigan, and Tim & Esther Hopwood of Shell Lake, Wisconsin. Also cherishing his memory are seven grandchildren – Lydia Hinkle, Amanda Boike, Adam Boike, David Hinkle, Nathan Hinkle, Mikayla Hinkle, and Alison Hinkle, and a brother and sister, Henry Hinkle and Ruth Hinkle, as well as hundreds of boys and men whose lives were touched by his.

A memorial service celebrating James’ life and ministry will be announced at a future date.

Memorial contributions in Brother Jimmy’s honor may be directed to Shiloh Youth Ranch, 10655 Roseland Road, Sebastian, Florida 32958.

Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Home, 1623 North Central Avenue, Sebastian, Florida 32958.

Many thanks to God for providing His grace and power to Brother Jim - his dedicated work, and Divine Providence working through him, saved many lives! Rev. Jim and his lovely wife Annette were dear friends to my Mom after Dad's passing, and were always so kind to me. May Annette be comforted and at peace, and may Bro. Hinkle rest in God's loving arms, rejoicing in Divine glory - forever!

Brother Jimmy, what a beautiful soul. I would phone brother Jimmy occasionally when there was something going on in the south pasture and always around Christmastime when I would ask for permission to walk around and count birds for the annual Audubon Christmas bird count. He would tell me how many turkeys have been seen lately and I would tell him what we spotted. Then I would be blessed to hear many of his stories of what I like to call God winks. If ever there was a man who answered our Fathers call to serve, it was Brother Jimmy.

I met Jimmy not too long after I was saved. he definitely had an impact on my life. He told me about Tennessee Temple Schools and not long after that I enrolled. I graduated in 1969. My wife and I stopped by to see Jimmy a few years ago and had a great time reminiscing. He had just had an encounter with a bull that didn't go to well. Our prayers are with Annette and the family. Thank God for the blessed hope. We will see him again.

It's hard to put into words what Brother Hinkle meant to me. I was blessed to attend and graduate from Shiloh (1989-1996). As a boy, I did not have a father. Brother Hinkle filled that role. I had several father figures at Shiloh, Brother Mark, Brother Bill, and Brother Chris to name a few. Brother Hinkle loved us all like his own children. I would not be the man, husband, and father without his love and guidance. Brother Hinkle's legacy will live on through all the lives that he has touched. Until we meet again ~Ariel

Dear Brother Hinkle,
It's been several weeks since we've spoken, and one week since you've gone home. I miss you greatly! I wanted to write sooner, but sadness was clouding my thoughts. I know what you're going to say, "Don't be sad son. I'm finally home! And as much as I used to talk about the 'Glory' to be experienced, it pales in comparison to anything I could have imagined!"
I'm confident you're incredibly happy where you are, and knowing we'll see each other again gives me peace. However, from a selfish perspective, I'm struggling with the sobering thoughts of not seeing you and talking with you, on this earth, again.
It' hard to believe it was just over 46 years ago when we first met. (One of two rag tag little boys whom you had never met before, but whom you welcomed and raised for the next, almost nine years.) I remember as though it were yesterday how, a short time after Chanse and I arrived at Shiloh, we came to your office and told you we wanted to be "saved". You picked me up and placed me on one knee, and Chanse on the other, as you prayed with us to receive salvation. That moment was the first time in my six years that I experienced the Father's love. Over the last twenty years I was blessed to experienced that love from you, on a daily basis. (Even at times when I didn't recognize it.)
Thank you for being such an incredible example of consistency in the life you lived here on earth. Throughout the years, I was always amazed by your faith, (A gift of God...) resilience, steadfastness, work ethic and faithfulness. However, one trait which has impacted me even much more, as I look back over the years, was your always-thankful heart and sincere gratitude for God's blessings and provision in your life. I loved listening to you recount with child-like excitement, (Regardless of how many times you retold some of the same stories.) instances of God's provision. The look in your eyes, and the inflection of your voice showed the sincerity of your heart. (A most powerful life-lesson.)
Thank you for being who you were, and for always giving God the Glory for your life. The last words you spoke to me will never be forgotten, and I will always treasure them, and you. Looking forward to the day when we will see each other again, but until then I will do my all to walk out your example, just as you walked out Christ Jesus' example.
I love you Brother Hinkle!

Your Son-In-Christ

Brother Hinkle was a very inspirational and charismatic messenger of God's word. I always found his sermons and sharing of the word, to be very empowering! He touched so many lives and made this world a much better place for us all! I pray for comfort for his family and the entire congregation. May we all find peace in knowing he lived a blessed life on earth and is at peace now.

I am sad to hear the news of Brother Hinkle. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago when i needed help for my son. Brother Hinkle took him under his wing and nurtured him in a way that i couldn't. He has played a great part in our lives. He will be missed tremendously. We are happy we had the pleasure of experiencing what a beautiful person he was. Inside and out! My condolences to his family!

I had the blessing of caring for Mr. Hinkle during this surreal time. The gentle smile and beautiful blue eyes spoke when he could not. I was witness to such love of his family when I gave updates on the phone. I felt that hug through the phone line when I told them "we got him off the vent" which was one of the best things to be able to share with a patient's family. I have been touched by families and patients throughout my years and often have to keep a profession boundary because of HIPPA laws but I'm here to say that I am deeply saddened for your loss. Those of us who cared for Mr. Hinkle understand your love for him and our hearts share in your loss. So on behalf of all of us who battled with John, we are sincerely sorry for your loss. I look forward to when we I get to heaven being able to see his sweet smile again. Bless you all.

I was 11 years of age when I was welcomed into the Shiloh family as well as the family of God. I'm 60 now and not a day goes by I don't thank God for Bro. Jimmy and Shiloh. I am very saddend about Brother Jimmy's departure from this life but am happy for him to finally see the Lord which we all know was on the top of his list. He was the Lords main Caretaker of Gods Place "Shiloh " and will be greatfully missed. But rest assured all the seeds were planted and I look forward to watching all of Gods blessings yet to come about at Shiloh. Rest in Peace Brother Jimmy till we meet again.

Uncle Jim was a man who lived his life for the Lord. Serving God & His people and proclaiming the Name of Jesus Christ.
Jim loved his wife and family and they loved him dearly. He was devoted to Shiloh Youth Ranch and always boasted in the Lord as he often shared numerous miracles of Gods faithful provision for every need of the ranch where he, his family and staff members touched the lives of hundreds of the boys who came to stay at Shiloh over many, many years. Though Jim Hinkle was the founder & shepherd of the Shiloh Youth Ranch, always he gave God all the glory. Uncle Jim loved the Word of God and knew it so well!! He was a preacher & teacher of the gospel serving as Senior pastor of the Shiloh Tabernacle...and as a passionate evangelist everywhere he went! My husband & I were blessed to know Uncle Jim and will always hold dear the times we spent with him & my Aunt Annette, my cousins, Mark, Rebecca and their families who served along with their parents at Shiloh. Jim left a legacy of love and devotion for Christ as he worked to further Gods kingdom. Most assuredly, Uncle Jim is hearing the Lord say Welcome Home, my precious son! Well done good and faithful servant! Our love & prayers are with our Aunt Annette, the Hinkle & the Boike families and all who knew and loved my uncle Jim. We offer our deepest sympathy in this time of loss as we join (in our hearts) in honoring the life of Jim Hinkle, a man of God, may he rest in peace.

I so admired Brother Jimmy's genuine humility and utmost devotion to the Lord. He was such an inspiration to me on how to live a godly Christian life and I am a much better person for it. He had such an impact on so many lives that I just know when he went home to his permanent address, God surely said, "A job well done, Brother Jimmy". Not a day will go by that we all will not miss this righteous man. Most of all, I will miss seeing him standing by the front door before church service ready to warmly greet me and shake my hand. I send my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Hinkle family. Love & prayers, Donna.

It's 3:30 in the morning and I'm at my desk at the airport looking at my phone waiting for it to ring and to hear your familiar voice saying " good morning son " I have spent many mornings before any employee have shown or any flights have flown talking to you about what laid ahead for the day and continuing the conversation we left off with the night before. It was as if we only paused to start where we left off, you would say " son I love to hear your voice and enjoy talking to you, but I want you to come see me so I can touch you and give you a hug " I know you spoke daily the way I did with you with your Heavenly Father and I believe he must of said these words to you " son I love to hear your voice and enjoy talking to you, but I want you to come see me so I can touch you and give you a hug " . Dad you were an amazing example to your family and I will miss calling you every night. I know your where you are and will someday come to you where you can touch me and give me a hug.
I love you and always will.

A letter to my dad
Dear Dad,
I talked to you on your birthday the night you went to the hospital and stayed up to get the call from Mark letting me know what was going on, got a few hours of sleep, got up early and went to work. I would normally call you on my way to work but thought you needed rest before you had to return to the hospital. I figured I would let you get settled in and then call you, instead I got a call from Mark telling me you would be put on a ventilator and in a coma, I immediately hung up with Mark and called your phone; I was too late.
Dad, I just want you to know it wasn't that I had anything to say that hadn't been said many times already, but I wanted to tell you one more that I love you and Thank you for all you have done. I will miss our phone calls on the way to and from work. You always said "God sets the time when you will be called home", He felt it was time to call you home.
Us kids will take good care of mom. Thank you for everything, I love you, I wouldn't be the man I am today without your guidance. I will see you when I get there.
Your son, John

When I first moved to Sebastian to plant a the. Community Baptist Church in 1986 one of the first local pastor to help me and encourage me was Pastor Jim, moving on to a raw undeveloped pice of land on Roseland Rd, and not having any money to rent any machinery, Bro Jim graciously lent me his John Deer Tractor, and not just once but any time I needed it, he was and is a real friend to local pastors here in Sebastian. Our loss is heavens gain, and I KNOW all who trust Christ will reunite with him, what a day that will be! Karen and send our love and prayers to the entire Hinkle family

Brother Jimmy has always been a pillar in our community. I remember attending services at Shiloh with my grandma back in the 70's and hearing Jimmy preach, then enjoying "dinner on the grounds". Jimmy brought the community together. He officiated for and counseled members of our family many times. He's a good and faithful man who will be missed.

Brother Hinkle will always hold one of the most special places in our families hearts along with the entire Shiloh family. We have been truly blessed by his grace and compassion along with his dedication and great perseverance in what he has taught us and all of the people and families he has interacted with over so many years. I will always remember and take joy in his wonderful stories and kind ways and how he lifted us up and encouraged us to always have Faith. He will be truly missed while at the same time his message and mission will be carried on. God Bless

Little did we know how, in the summer of 2015, an invitation to attend Shiloh Tabernacle Church would change all our lives. We had been searching for a church for a considerable time a church where the true and living word of God was preached, spoken and demonstrated. The testimony, teaching and love from Brother Jimmy (as well as his family and church friends), was the answer to all our prayers.
I love to sing and was privileged to be able to sing more than 50 solos in the time we attended Shiloh. Looking back, amazingly, the first song I sang was What A Day That Will Be. What made it amazing was, perhaps, that was Brother jimmys favorite expression one seem to hear it in every sermon he gave as he spoke of the joy he knew would come when he joined the Lord in eternity.
The last song I sang was The Anchor Holds. How appropriate as God was his anchor, throughout his life, as He heard Jimmys prayers and satisfied his every need.
What a day that will be, Jimmy, when were with you again.

My first recollection of Uncle Jimmy was listening to him preach at my Grandfathers church that stood up atop a hill in Weatherly PA. Im not sure how old I was but I remember leaving church so scared of where my eternal life would be spent. He was, shall I say, passionate to his very core about God, heaven and his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Much later on in life I got to know him and the real person he was when he helped my father, (his brother) and then again when he gave my oldest son the opportunity to attend Shiloh. I will forever be thankful for his kindness and generosity to my family and for the lasting impression he, Aunt Annette, my family and the staff of Shiloh left on my son. That was in the early 90s and I made many trips to Florida to visit with my dad and was thankful Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Annette always made time to spend with me in fellowship. God granted me the ability to travel to Florida three years ago and visit with Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Annette. Our time together meant so much to me. My heart was so heavy when we first sat in the living room and he seemed to know without it being said. There were things I did not know about my younger years. I was thankful for answers and I left there that day with so much clarity and understanding of just how much my Aunt and Uncle did for me and my brothers. I will forever be thankful for Gods presence that day and every day since. I have never known such peace throughout my entire life. I had been saved and came to know the Lord when I was 11 in that very same little white church on the hill and it was because of my Uncle Bob, Uncle Jimmy, my PapPap Hinkle and all my family. Thank you Lord...for giving me life into such an amazing family. Thank you Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Annette for taking care of me and for all you did for us. May the lord comfort my Aunt Annette, my cousins and families, my entire family at large and Shiloh. May God grace each of you with strength and guidance, now and in the days to come. I rejoice in knowing Uncle Jimmy is now in the presence of the one he served and loved for most of his 81 years. What a beautiful reunion it must be in glory. I know I will see him again along with others who will be awaiting my arrival. All my love to Aunt Annette and the family. God Bless you all...my prayers are with you

The memories I have of Jimmy and his family would fill a book. His father and mother would take some of us neighborhood children on Sunday afternoons to the little White Church on The Hill where we sang gospel music and learned stories of our Savior. There were a few times I didnt want to go because I went in the morning!! His brother Paul would throw me over his shoulder and either Jimmy or Henry would peel my fingers from the doorways we passed through!! It was always a beautiful afternoon complete many times with ice cream afterwards!! This family was a lot more than neighbors!! They were and still are family, maybe not by blood but by love!! Jimmy left town early but is still remembered with loving thoughts!! A mighty fine man who did so much for others. God certainly has a great assistant now!! Rest In Peace, Jimmy. ❤ to everyone of you. God Bless you all.

In the 16 years weve come to know and love Pastor weve also learned what it means to be an authentic Christian. Then, too weve learned to trust the Lord in new and amazing ways. Time and again we witnessed God supplying the needs of Shiloh and many times never even knew there was a dire need. It wasnt Pastors way to whine, complain, or worry about financial needs. He trusted the Lord and the Lord answered. His dealings with the boys at school was a lesson in agape love. They could not help but love and respect him in return. Every day we thank the Lord for the awesome privilege of being a part of this mans ministry. Deepest sympathies to the family.

Brother Hinkle touched my life in a very special way. He led me to the Lord and then Baptized me 1 week later. He mentored me and taught me how a man is supposed to work hard. He taught me how to be a husband and a father. I would not be the man I am today without him in my life. I love you Brother Hinkle. I will miss you. Until we meet again in heaven.
Love,
Robert Talley
