Patricia Kiser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2024.
Patricia Ann Kiser July 1, 1951- March 21 , 2024

Pat Kiser, of Avon, died at UConn hospital on March 21st after a brief but intense battle with cancer. Pat was born in Tennessee and was very proud of her roots in Chattanooga. She moved to Avon, Connecticut as a girl and attended the Oxford School in West Hartford. After going back to Tennessee and getting her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, Pat earned a Masters Degree in Library Science at Long Island University. Due to her lifelong interest in learning and love of music, she earned a second Masters Degree in Music from the University of Hartford's Hartt College of Music.

Pat put her excellent education to work for the libraries of the University of Hartford and Trinity College before finishing her career working for over two decades for the Capitol Region Library Council and its spinoff organization, Library Connection, Inc. She also worked part-time at the Reference Department of the Avon Free Public Library.

Her academic degrees reflected Pat's outside interests as well. She was a voracious reader, and a devoted fan of opera and Broadway musicals. Her mother, Harriet Kiser, formed an organization called Opera-tunities, which was a continuing education program in Simsbury, West Hartford, Farmington and at the Greater Hartford Graduate Center. The program coordinated the purchase of season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera and bus trips to the performances. After her mother's death, Pat continued the organization for a few years.

In addition to attending musical performances, Pat also sang in a local chapter of the Sweet Adelines and the Farmington Valley Choral. She sang in the choir at the Avon Congregational Church for over 40 years.

Pat loved Avon and volunteered at the Fire Department and the Lions Club where she served as club president. Beyond her family, community and music, Pat's greatest love was supporting the faith and mission of the Avon Congregational Church. In addition to her dedication to the Junior and Senior Choirs, Pat served with the World Service, Music, Christian Education and Diaconate committees and was a Sunday School teacher.

Pat was an avid traveler in life, and now has gone on her final journey to rejoin her beloved parents Harriet and John Kiser, and brother Robert. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be sent to the Leo Boswell Music Enrichment Fund at the Avon Congregational Church, 6 West Main Street, Avon, CT 06001. A memorial service will be held at Avon Congregational Church, 6 West Main Street, on April 18th at 1:30pm. The Reverend Jennifer will preside. An ice-cream sundae reception will follow the service.

Pat was a very knowledgeable and helpful cataloger during her years at LCI. I know I benefited from her guidance. I hope any pets she had have been rehomed. She loved her kitties especially the one who looked like Charlie Chaplin.

I worked with Pat at Library Connection and learned a lot about cataloging from her, but my favorite memories concern our chats about music, musicals, books, travel, and Tennessee. She was a sweet, smart, and curious person.

Pat helped us bring musical programs to the Bloomfield Libraries in the form of her Harriet Kiser grant project. I will always remember her helpful and generous spirit. Laura Vasselle
