Patrick Briggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2023.

The world is a duller place with the extinguishing of a brilliant spark. Patrick Briggs, 58, recently of Palm Springs, CA, died at his home on 12/27/22. The cause was lung cancer complicated by RSV.

A nightclub impresario whose party, "Squeezebox," created with Michael Schmidt at Don Hill's in downtown NYC broke down barriers in the 90's, he is also known for fronting industrial glam band "Psychotica," as well as for his public drag persona "Torment." Fiercely loyal and known for his generosity, Mr Briggs leaves a legacy of devilish humor and boundless talent. His fans around the world continue to benefit from his visionary creative genius.

In Los Angeles, with Brian Raven, he founded the famous "Club Make Up" at the El Rey Theater. In Atlanta he created "Glitterdome" at The Masquerade. Psychotica's storied success exemplifies Mr. Briggs' immense charisma. They were signed to American Records when an A&R rep overheard them practicing for their first show. Soon after, they played the main stage at Lollapalooza 1996 before releasing their first album. Psychotica played alongside Soundgarden, The Ramones, Screaming Trees and Metallica, and went on to tour with bands such as Iggy Pop and Tool.

In 1995, clothing designer Stephen Sprouse positioned statues of Psychotica members in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as part of a Glam Rock exhibit. Along with Mr. Briggs were Paul Kostabi, Enrique Tiru Velez, Tommy Salmorin, Reeka and Frank "Buz" Altimare. Sprouse also created the design of their logo and first album cover. Randy Phillips signed the band to Red Ant. They also released an album with Zero Hour Records.

Before Psychotica formed, Mr. Briggs played Tom Collins in the original cast of RENT at the Fourth Street Workshop in New York City. In the late 2000s he began exhibiting his paintings, semi-realistic figurative works portraying Old Hollywood starlets. He built and painted furniture, a continuation of his lifelong love of crafts-which included making his own remarkable costumes and stage props.

Born "Patrick Edward Haverly" on 6/16/64 in Burbank, CA, to Judy Thomas Haverly and Edward Haverly, Pat was adopted at three years of age by his maternal grandmother and her spouse, who changed his name to "Patrick Briggs DiGiovanni."

Pat leaves behind his brother, Justin; aunt Patti Thomas; nieces and nephews: Amber, Nohea, Kalia, Keahe, Mae Lynne, and Kawehena; and numerous loving cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Edward Haverly; grandfather Philip Thomas; great-grandmother, Florence Thomas, and sister, Samantha. Carrie Hamilton and Alexis Arquette held special places in his heart.

His friends are far too numerous to list, but among his closest are Jody Hamilton and Lonny Paul, Rosanna and Patricia Arquette, Steve Stevens, Taime Downe, Elijah Blue Allman, Raven O, Paul Kostabi and Heidi Follin, Jesse Mason, Henry Tiru, Geoff Grayson, Kenji Hino, Ira Elliot, Manny Parrish, and Michael Schmidt.

A tribute will be held at The Box in New York City on March 6, 2023. Announcements regarding other tributes will be made as plans are finalized.

Pat was a good soul who lived many adventures, aural and visual. I remember his energy, is output, and his character. I wish he was still among us.

I remember ru ready? I was at PolyGram records and we saw Pat perform many times at the cat club. He went onto fame as we knew he would - so incredibly talented. Rest in peace Pat. Jill

I saw Psychotica play on the last date coming off of the Lallapalooza tour. During the performance of New Man, I found myself in a restroom whose door faced the front wall of the venue, and the astounding sonic wail of his voice bouncing off of that wall and surrounding me is one of my most very treasured concert experiences. Truly had to be felt to be understood! Rest in peace, my lovely.

Been over a couple of years now, and ages since we talked at all (I was at the last Don Hill's show, but we didn't get to talk, and I regret that), but I still miss just knowing that Pat was out there in the world, doing the thing.

I learned so much about being both a performer and a good person from Pat, and it was all taught without effort, and by example. It didn't all sink in at the same time, but I think I've mostly got it now.

No one sounded quite like Patrick Briggs, or had his perspective. No one I've met or spent time around in show business of any sort was kinder and more respectful to their fans, so many of whom became friends in the time I spent around him.

Continued love and strength to everyone reading this who cared about Pat.

Whether he knew it or not, Pat was directly responsible for the 20 best years of my life - and he seemed GENUINELY shocked when I asked him about RU Ready the first time I met him after a Psychotica show. Rest well, sir, the world is A LOT darker without your voice to light it up.

We lost a great voice and a great man. He took time to write to my partner, which is such a generous gift, and sent my partner a picture of one of his tattoos. He will be missed by some fans in Maryland. Rest Easy, Pat!

My drummer and I went to our usuall place in KC, The Riot Room and walked into the aural assault of Psychotica on their first tour. We had no idea who they were but we were instantly fans. Pats voice was unbelievable!
I followed the band to a few shows on the following tour!
Pat was a beautiful soul as well as a beautiful voice and will be celebrated and missed the rest of my days.

No words can express what the first Psychotica album meant to me, still means...I never have quite fit in anywhere, often felt on the outside of every given situation, but this album...your music...made me feel like, somewhere, there were others who understood, who felt the things that i felt, saw the things that i saw. I can never repair that gift, but will never forget it either. Rest easy Pat,,,
