Patrick Cardy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 26 to Mar. 28, 2005.
CARDY, Patrick 1953-2005 Suddenly in hospital on March 24, 2005. Patrick Robert Thomas Cardy in his 52nd year. Beloved husband of Janet (Ashley). Loving father of Jonathan and Michael. Cherished son of Mary Cardy. Predeceased by his father Robert. Beloved son-in-law of Beverly Ashley. Dearly loved brother of Jamie (Joan), Rob (Nancy), Dan (Janice), Sheila Coffin (Lew), Maureen Buchanan (Tom) and Angela. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Patrick was a prolific composer, well-known in the Ottawa community, across Canada and beyond for superbly crafted music of warm lyricism, poignancy, and charm. Born in Toronto on 22 August 1953 and raised in Kitchener, Patrick was educated at the University of Western Ontario and at McGill University, where he earned his doctorate under the supervision of the late Bengt Hambraeus. In 1977 he joined the Music Program in the School for Studies in Art and Culture at Carleton University where he will be remembered by a generation of students for his meticulous standards as well as his warmth and generosity, the very qualities that endeared Patrick also to his many friends and colleagues in the Carleton community. Patrick was involved in many aspects of his profession, active as an adjudicator, lecturer and broadcaster as well as serving in various capacities for Ottawa's new music concert society Espace Musique, the Canadian University Music Society, and the Canadian League of Composers. In 1992 his "Virelai" for clarinet and string orchestra was nominated for a JUNO award in the "Best Classical Composition" category, and during the 1996-97 concert season he served as new music advisor to the National Arts Centre Orchestra. As a performer himself (he was a fine flutist) Patrick had a deep understanding of the expressive possibilities of the entire range of musical instruments, which perhaps explains his more than fifty commissions from performers and musical groups of many kinds, from the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony to pianists Elaine Keillor and Angela Hewitt. Patrick's passion for music was surpassed only by his love of his wife Janet, his sons Jonathan and Michael, his large extended family and wide circle of friends. He will be missed for his lively conversation, his sense of humour and his uncommon humility. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home 580 Eagleson Road (Kanata) Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Tuesday to St. Patricks Church, Fallowfield for Mass of Christian Funeral at 11 a.m. Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery in the spring. In Memoriam donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of your choice appreciated.

Dear Mrs Cardy, Jonathan and Michael

I had the great honor to have had your husband (father) as my Profesor at Carleton in 1990. The way he taught and the way he cared for all of his students is also another great gift of Dr.Cardy. I like to visit the website of Carleton every now and again, and tonight I was shocked to find out about the passing of a great man. From my family to yours our prayers and thoughts are with each of you.

Dear Janet,

Tom and I were shocked to hear about Patrick's sudden death. He was a great person and a great composer. We loved the selections of Zodiac dances performed by the Atlantic String Quartet last November in St John's, and we enjoyed having a chance to catch up on Patrick's news when he was in town.

You and your children have our deepest sympathy.

My deepest condolences to Janet Cardy and her two sons for their loss.

I had the honour of studying with Dr. Cardy during my years at Carleton (1999-2003). I will probably remember him most for his generosity in giving his time for his students, as well as his passion for his work and his music.

We met Patrick as Jonathan's Dad at the hockey arena, where Jonathan played on a team with our son, Ben, a few years ago. We enjoyed a few chats while the boys practiced. He was easy to talk to, as is Janet, whom we also had the pleasure of meeting through hockey.

To Janet, Jonathan and Michael, we're so sorry for your loss. We will be praying for you, that God will give you strength and courage and will comfort you.

I studied composition with Patrick Cardy at Carleton U in 1994. I enjoyed his lectures very much. He was an inspiring teacher and he fueled my love for the art of composition. It is a great loss for music and for all of us whom he touched with his music and generosity. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family Maestro.

I didn't know Mr.Cardy all that well, having corresponded with him and talked to him only a few times. However, when I attended the concert given by the Ottawa Chamber Music Society a few weeks ago that was dedicated to his music, I immediately had immense respect for the composer and the man. I love his music and as much as I was looking forward to working with him on the "Masks of Astarte", I'm going to enjoy playing it now even more, knowing that all the effort I put into it will contribute to the memory of Patrick Cardy. What a wonderful person.

My best wishes to the family.

I only met Patrick once at a summer family gathering in 2004. Knowing his work, I was initially somewhat intimidated by this unassuming gentleman as he was the epitome of what I though a musician should be.

Intelligent, articulate and possessed of an extremely dry wit, we discussed our latest songwriting efforts, the software we both used to write and our wish list of musical equipment. He offered me nothing but kinship and encouragement. You will be missed Patrick.

Janet, Jonathan and Michael you are in my thoughts.

I've always enjoyed Patrick's somewhat warped sense of humour. One time in particular while eating in one of Ottawa's finest restaurants, Patrick mimicked stapling his lower lip to the table saying, "I hate it when that happens." I knew then I had a buddy.

The first time he 'met the family' I had the honour of making Patrick an honourary Newfoundlander, a healthy swig of Screech and a kiss for a codfish welcomed him into our province. His smile and warmth welcomed us into his life.

At this time of great loss all my love goes out to Janet and the boys.
