Patrick Foy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 21, 2008.
EDMESTON _ Patrick Thomas Foy, 60, of Edmeston, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, from throat cancer at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Born April 14, 1947, to Daniel and Margaret (Corey) Foy on Staten Island, Mr. Foy was a member of the first graduating class of Msgr. Farrell High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in French and education and a post-baccalaureate certificate in English from Iona College in New Rochelle. While at Iona on full scholarship for cross-country, track and field, Mr. Foy was also a proud member of the college's Gaelic Society and a drummer with its bagpipe band. He was most proud of the ICAAAA medal he won as part of Iona's legendary cross-country team in the 1960s. He later earned a master of science in education degree with a concentration in reading from the College of New Rochelle.
Teaching and coaching students were his passions. Mr. Foy taught for almost 20 years in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York, and later in the Tri-county area. His career was multi-faceted, teaching students from fourth grade through college, those gifted and talented and especially his beloved students who wanted to learn how to read. Certified to teach French, English and remedial reading, he made each student feel that they could learn and how proud he was of each of them.
For more than 40 years, Mr. Foy was involved in one way or another with running. His grandfather was a contender for the 1896 Olympics and running was in his blood. He will always be remembered not only for his championship track teams at Greenwich High School, Mount St. Michael Academy and in Unatego and Unadilla Valley, but also for the impact he made on each of the young people whose lives he touched. He received several awards attesting to his dedication to his students and to his athletes.
Mr. Foy is survived by his former wife, Barbara J. Durkin; and his daughter, Meaghan S. D. Foy, both of the Bronx; his mother, Margaret L. Foy; his brothers, Kevin W. (Christine) Foy of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Brian E. Foy of Chester, Va.; as well as six nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Daniel P. Foy in 1988.
Viewing will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home, Main Street, New Berlin, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, beginning with a recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Fr. Francis J. Case at St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Church, New Berlin, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008. Burial will follow in Edmeston Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmeston Fire Department.

I came across Coach Foy's obit just this week and wanted to let the family know how much I loved having him as a coach at GHS back in the 80's. I'm a track and XC coach now and remember his guidance fondly. RIP Coach.

For those who may read this book in the future; the Foy family thanks everyone who supported Patrick, Meaghan and Barbara over the years. I would like to personally thank those who helped Pat from 2004-2008. There are so many people that I fear I'd leave someone out....so I send a big THANK YOU to one and all. Patrick is in a better place and is free of the fear and pain!.....Kevin (the middle brother)

I first met Pat, Barbara and little Megan when they first moved to the area. I worked at Dykes Drug and enjoyed knowing them. Our deepest
sympathy. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
