Patrick Gibson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 18 to Oct. 20, 2007.
GIBSON _ Patrick March 21, 1936 - October 16, 2007 Patrick Gibson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Devoted to both his family and the Catholic Church, Pat spent thirty-seven years teaching junior high school in the separate school system, the last twenty-five years of his career at St. Stephen's School, where many teachers and former students hold fond and indelible memories of him. Specializing in teaching "fear and discipline" (according to Pat), interspersed with a great deal of humour, Pat touched the lives of many and will always be remembered affectionately as "the Gibber". Sports and music were also his passion, and his greatest joy in the past few years was the time he spent playing in the Calgary Senior Men's Slo-Pitch league. After retiring in 1998, he spent much of his retirement days playing slo-pitch and watching sports (not necessarily in that order) and exercising regularly to the music he loved on his iPod. His weekly coffee buddies will miss him tremendously. Left to mourn his passing are Gerry and their children, Shellee (Robert), Jill (Bob) and Marty (Anna); his grandchildren, Robin, Nick, Justyn, Eve, Jasmine, Kate, Alec, Samantha, and Alexandra; his dear friend Sonja; his sisters Marie and Kathleen; brother James; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Pat was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth; father John; brothers, Donald (Bing) and Leonard; and nephew Donald. Father, grandpa, coach, teacher, friend, we love you and will miss you always! Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Monday, October 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor's choice. In living memory of Patrick Gibson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Mr. Gibson was such a warmth and passionate teacher, who gave each classmate a big hug or words of welcome before each class. I was so blessed and felt extremely welcome and well taken care when I arrived Calgary from Hong Kong for my very first junior high school year in St Stephen. His class was always fun to attend with his great sense of humour. I was saddened to learn about his passing and he will always be remembered by me and many whom he has touched in the past.

When I heard of Mr. Gibson's passing, I felt very sad, because I always wanted to meet up with him again. Mr. Gibson was the first teacher that really made me believe that school wasn't a total waste of time. He also encouraged me to start running which really helped my confidence - and I still run to this day. And even though I've never met any of Mr. Gibson's family, I would like to let them know that in addition to being a wonderful teacher, he was also a mentor and a friend. I'll never forget my home room Grade 9 teacher.

Auntie Gerry, Shellee, Jill & Marty.I'm so sorry for your loss. Uncle Pat was a special person not just because my mom loved him dearly or that he was my godfather, but everytime I saw him it brought a smile and special fond memories of that summer @ Grand Beach (I'll never forget). From myself, Linda, Ashley & Marcus take care.

Dear family, I was made aware today of Pat's passing and would like to send along my thoughts and prayers to all of you. He was such a gentile man and really didn't like to complain. I was always so impressed with all his family support. God Bless You All. Patsy Lane ( Dr. Angyalfi's nurse)

Shellee,
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your father. Until a few years ago, I'd often see him at mass, and it was clear he was very devout in his faith. May you and your family find strength and peace that overcome your sadness.

My dear Gibson's,

So many memories come to me when I think of Mr. Gibson and Wilkinson Place! Gosh - where would one even begin. I do remember loud and rocking music whenever I was there - your dad loved his tunes and always had the best ones on the record player! Now that dates us doesn't it? I think that might be where my love for all things music was born or at least deeply appreciated. I remember the laundry room where he had his special chair, tv and food/beverage. His own sanctuary for sports! Gosh - whatever he took on, he did it with passion and enthusiasm. I always remember his smile and the caustic remarks (said in love however) that he had to share. I thought I ought to have a witty repartee for him when we engaged in dialogue. He had a love for life in all of its forms and reinvented himself along the way. I was so grateful for his desire and ability to do this and took solace in knowing that he was able to find in himself and celebrate all the goodness and greatness that he possessed. Even though I haven't seen Mr. Gibson for years, it seems like only yesterday that his smile, laugh and energy added value to my life. Thanks Mr. Gibson for sharing that so readily! God Bless you, your family, friends and persons that were touched by your life. You live on in all of us. Love Cathy Vogelgesang.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. I played slo-pitch with Pat and we shared much fun and had many laughs during our play in both summer and winter ball and during the coffee time which followed. He loved playing the game and will be sadly missed by all of us.

I had the honour of teaching with Pat in my first year with the Calgary Catholic Board. He was a huge support for the rookie teachers and had very sage advice for us. He was also great for sharing stories and insights into the profession that he loved. He will be missed and his spirit lives on in his children and grandchildren and the many hundreds of students he taught in his life. I thank God that I was blessed enough to call him a friend.

My condolences to all of the Gibson family...

Jill, and family,
I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your dad; how awful this must be for all of you.
My memories of being in Calgary for the family functions, and getting to know your dad, are so special to me. Please take care, and remember, he has left himself in all of you.

My prayers are with you.

Sincerely,
Mary-Lynn Gerald
