Patrick Malone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2009.
Malone, Dr. Patrick M. age 72, of Sanibel, FL and Spicer, MN, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23, at his home on Green Lake following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 28, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 27, 4-7 PM at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Visitation is also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Patrick Martin Malone was born on June 2, 1937, in Faribault, MN to Francis Harry and Virginia (Havel) Malone. He graduated from Le Sueur HS in 1955 and attended St. John's University and graduated in 1959. He finished medical school at the U of M in 1963. Pat married his beloved Wanda Quilitz on April 27, 1963. Following graduation from medical school, he completed his internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN. Pat served as a captain in the Air Force from 1964 to 1966 as a flight surgeon. He then began his radiology residency at the U of M and VA Hospitals. His residency was completed in 1970. Pat and Wanda moved their family to Willmar, MN in the summer of 1970. Pat was passionate about his profession as a radiologist. He practiced at Rice Memorial Hospital and surrounding communities until 2005. In the early 80's, he began to pursue another passion, writing. He immersed himself in creating short stories initially and then proceeded to publish The Deep Woods Trilogy. He based his characters on woodland creatures from his treasured hobby farm. In his stories, he sought to teach lessons on kindness, generosity and faith. Pat and Wanda have enjoyed wintering in Sanibel, FL for years and bought a permanent home there in 2000. He enjoyed the paradise of Sanibel but always said, "the only thing missing are my children." He felt he had the best of both worlds living there during the winter and on beautiful Green Lake during the summer. Pat is survived by his wife, Wanda; sons and daughter, Dan (and Trudy) of Pewaukee, WI, Mike (and Jamie) of Spicer, MN, Melissa (and Dan) of Tonka Bay, MN, Christopher of St. Paul, MN and Justin (and Chelsea) of Apple Valley, MN; nine grandchildren, Hannah, Matt, Catie, Dylan, Aislyn, Alec, Patrick, Addie & Ayven; sister, Mary Ann Antolak of Austin, TX and many relatives and friends. Pat was preceded in death by his parents and baby daughter, Rebecca.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Malone family. Just two years ago, we were fortunate enough to be paired with Wanda and Pat on a golf course in Sanibel. We seemed to form an instant friendship and enjoyed reuniting with them during our visits to Florida. We certainly feel a loss.

We were so sorry to hear about Pat. Jerry interned with Pat at St. Mary's Hospital. We knew Pat and Wanda and their first little boy. Our prayers go out to you Wanda and the rest of your family. Pat will be greatly missed.

Though we did not have the pleasure of knowing Dr. Malone, our hearts are with his daughter, Melissa and all of her extended family. Melissa is a wonderful, warm, loving person who loved & admired her father greatly.

Know that we are all praying for you.

My sincere sympathy to Dr. Malone's family. Pat and I graduated from high school together and I remember him as a kind, active youth who was a friend to everyone. I became even more of a "fan" after reading his "Deep Woods Triology". He will be greatly missed by so many.

My condolences to Dr. Malone's family. I worked with Dr. Malone in Alexandria prior to his retirement and it was always a better week when he was in house. He was never too busy to listen and he had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. I am grateful to have known him.
