Patsy Himes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 26, 2024.
Patsy Ann Himes, 96, passed away on December 19, 2024, at the Danbury in Wooster, Ohio. She was born on August 5, 1928, in Perrysville, Ohio to John H. Nigh and Pauline P. (Hiner) Nigh.

Patsy grew up in Perrysville, Ohio. She graduated from Perrysville High School in 1946 as valedictorian. After high school she attended the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio where she received a baccalaureate degree in biology in 1950. After college, Patsy was busy as a homemaker, tending to her husband and raising their two sons, Stephen (Steve) and Brian Thomas (Tom). When her sons were old enough, she began to work as a substitute teacher in the Galion city school system and later started teaching full-time. When Patsy moved with her family from Galion to Mansfield, Ohio in 1968, she began teaching biology full-time at Mansfield Malabar High School. She retired from teaching in 1990.

Patsy met Herbert Q. Himes at the College of Wooster, and in 1949 they married in Perrysville, Ohio. They were happily married for 56 years. Patsy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galion, Ohio and then the First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield, Ohio. She and Herb were active College of Wooster alumni and supported the College of Wooster throughout their married lives. Patsy loved to garden, read books, and talk to all people. She was an active member of the Kingwood Center Herb Society for many years until she moved to Wooster in 2018.

Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and her parents John and Pauline Nigh.

Patsy is survived by her sons Stephen Jonathan Himes of Bristow, Virginia, Brian Thomas (Lizbeth) Himes of Slidell, Louisiana; her sister Barbara Jane Haudenschild of Wooster, Ohio; her grandchildren Michael Thomas Himes, Christopher Matthew Himes (Abby), and John Thomas Himes; her great-grandchild Cooper Thomas Himes; and her nieces and nephews and other relatives. The family would like to thank the management and staff of The Danbury in Wooster for their devoted care during Patsy's residence.

The family will hold a memorial service at a date and time to be determined in April 2025 at the First Presbyterian Church of Wooster, 621 College Avenue, Wooster, Ohio. The family will greet friends and relatives afterwards at the church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Ohio State Route 39, Perrysville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Kingwood Center Gardens at https://kingwoodcenter.org/donate/.
