Buddy Bucha is the most outstanding man I've ever known. As a "Plebe" (first year/freshman) at West Point in the autumn of 1963, he was my "Cow" (third year/junior) squad leader right down the hall at this critical formative time. His high standards and firm positive leadership were most important to my graduating and serving as an Armor officer.

Although I never met Capt. Paul Bucha, what an inspiration he was! He was a smart, self-confident and honest man. From what I read, he inspired others and he saved many lives. He was able to come through the hardships of war and hold his head high. He led a wonderful life and touched so many hearts. He was a true American Hero! May God bless him and his family.

As an assistant swimming coach at USMA from 1962 - 64, I got to know Buddy as a cadet. He was a leader as a cadet. I had developed a "waterman's test". One requirement was to swim 50 yards under water on one breath (2 lengths of a 25 yd. pool) The catch was in order to get the highest grade, the first lap had to be done feet first. Buddy would not give up and come to the surface until he passed out. He was one tough hombre....It was my honor to know him, and all the cadets at that time.
