Paul Castleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 7 to Apr. 8, 2014.
Paul Stanley Castleman DAYTON, OH - Paul Stanley Castleman, age 73, of Dayton, OH passed away Friday, April 4, 2014. Stanley was a gentleman in the truest sense. A loving husband and father, respectful and generous to everyone he knew, civically active, an avid golfer, he was also a born matchmaker of both romantic and business partnerships. Stanley was born February 14, 1941 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late Steve and Virginia Castleman. At a very early age his family moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi. Stanley described his youth in the Mississippi Delta as being positive, upbeat and a great environment in which to grow up, rich in history and a wonderful community that cared about everyone. He graduated from Yazoo City High School in 1959, and later entered The Citadel 'Class of 1964'. Stanley recalled, "I was blessed to become a member of Tango Company where I met eight other freshman 'NOBS'. That first day encounter began what turned out to be a beautiful fifty-year friendship. They are some of the finest people I would ever hope to know." He received an MBA from University of Chicago, and later completed the SCMP at Harvard Business School. Stanley's business career included Bluebird Baking Co. and Chicago Pastry Co. (1973-1988). He subsequently applied his entrepreneurial spirit to a career in banking (1988-2014) as Vice President of Fifth Third Bank, Huntington National Bank and finally with LCNB National Bank. He was a Vietnam-era veteran, a three-term elected city council member of Oakwood, Ohio, an active volunteer and a board member of the American Heart Association, Aullwood Audubon Center, and Artemis Domestic Violence Center. He also served on the board of directors of Huntington National Bank (Dayton) and the Dayton Machine Tool Company. He was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Moraine Country Club, and the Forty-Nine Club. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Steve and sister, Virginia Ward. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Maria (Preonas); son, Louis; daughter, Mary; and extended Castleman and Preonas families. Visitation will be held Monday, April 7th from 4-7 PM at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Rd. Kettering, OH with Trisagion Prayers at 5 PM at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 8th at 10 AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 500 Belmonte Park North. Dayton, OH. Maria, Louis, and Mary. I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of your loss. I lived across the street from Stanley in Yazoo City and was a fellow cadet at The Citadel. I visited at your home many years ago and was so delighted to meet you. Stanley was such a fine and generous gentleman. He will be always remembered and much missed. Please know you are in my prayers... Harry Spell

Ms. Maria and Family,
I'm so sorry for your loss.Stanley was such a great person. Our days at The Citadel are filled with so many memories that I tear up just thinking about them. We were able to renew and redo many of them year before last in Charleston for the T Company reunion. Stanley showed this "yankee" many times what being a Southern Gentleman entailed. I will miss him - may he rest in peace and know how many people loved him !

I am a TANGO Classmate & recall a sweet and VERY GENTLEMANLY man.

Stan was always the first to smile, always the first to assist. Yet he did own a mischievous demeanor...ALWAYS FUN!

Stanley, Stanley...how you will be missed!!

Like "RedBall", we enjoyed our sweet reunion in 2005, but wish I could have seen more of you...Sad to also find that I lived/worked in Dayton, mid-late 90's & never knew we were in same area...

Dear Maria, Louis and Mary - I am most saddened to learn of the passing of Stanley (Mr.C as I always called him) and sorry I was not able to be with you in person for the visitation or services due to being out of the country. I consider myself privileged to have been the small boy growing up next door to you on Grandon Road and having known Stanley who always was a support and positive role model. I will never forget his encouraging smile and genuine personality. I am a better person today for having known him in my life. I pray that you all may find peace during this most difficult time and with my my sincerest sympathy.

Stanley was a gentleman in the truest sense. He was a great and loyal friend, who could be counted on when advice or help was needed. I have never met a more genuine person. I will miss him.

Stan was my best friend throughout the years we roomed together at The Citadel.
Although we only got together once since The Citadel, in 2005, we picked up like we had never left off. I was very happy to learn that he was having a great life both with his family and his career. We communicated since then but with Stan in Ohio and me in Minnesota, we never got together again which I deeply regret. I have thought of Stan frequently over the last 50 years always with fond memories and I will continue to think of him for as long as I live. He was a very good man, and I miss him already.

I have known Stanley since our days at The Citadel and counted him as one of my dearest friends. He was a gentlemen, but he was also fun. I never heard him say one unkind word about another human being. He was one of "Boo's lambs." I am going to miss him greatly. Rhett
