Paul Dias Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2025.
Paul Joseph Dias was born June 20, 1944 in San Jose, California to Joseph T. and Alberta E. Dias and went to be with the Lord on April 11, 2025 at the age of 80. He was raised in San Jose and attended St. John Vianney, James Lick High School and San Jose State College. He married Sandy Stark in 1966 and later remarried. Paul worked at his families crop dusting business in Tracy in his teenage years, then began working in the Golf course industry mowing, growing and finally managing the entire golf course before retiring from the City of Palo Alto.

Paul enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He loved working in the yard maintaining all sorts of flowering plants and shrubs. He enjoyed cooking, creating a new BBQ marinade and grilling good food to share with his family and friends. Paul hosted a seafood boil on the beach for several years and loved preparing for and hosting this annual event.

In his younger years, Paul enjoyed camping and jet boating with his family and best friends (Richards and Bettencourt) and their families. Many weekends were spent at the Sacramento Delta or Lake Berryessa camping and waterskiing. Paul also loved Nascar and raced his own Super Modified at the San Jose Speedway for many years and also travelled to a few other local tracks with the Bettencourt brothers.

One of the highlights of his life was travelling. He travelled to Hawaii, Africa, Puerta Vallarta Mexico and Texas. Every year for over 20 years he travelled to Puerta Vallarta for a month-long stay at his favorite beachfront Condo with his sister Cheryl Sotelo and Brother in law Rich Sotelo. During their stays, they met and made many great friends. After Mexico, he would fly to Texas to spend time with his daughter Stacey and her family. He will definitely be missed!

Paul was part of the following organizations: Golf Course Superintendents Association of Northern California (past President), GlenOaks Park Villas (past President) and Nascar.

Paul is survived by his daughter Stacey Barbosa and son in law Darwin Barbosa, grandson Joshua Barbosa, sister Cheryl Sotelo and brother in law Rich Sotelo, sister Carol Ditton Smith and late husband Mick Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul's wish was to be cremated and will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose.

Paul will be missed. He was always a great friend and coworker. We´ve enjoyed several golf trips, movies and meals together. He was always upbeat and friendly to all. I have so many memories that will stay with me even though he is gone. Lots of love Paul and Maureen.

Rest in peace dear Paul. My brother Larry and I along with Cheryl and Carol became an extended family at a young age. You will be missed.
