DOUGLAS, Paul Marshall Born March 7, 1936 in Constantine, Algeria. Died December 31, 2010 in Cranbrook, BC, Canada. Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, teacher, musician, composer. Paul began studying music while a boy in Constantine with the flute as his lifelong chosen instrument. A graduate of Central Methodist College (1958), now Central Methodist University, Fayette, MO and Hartt School of Music, Hartford, CT, Paul was Band Director at Washington High School, Washington, MO for four years, Interim Music Instructor at Drake University, Des Moines, IA for one year and retired as Professor Emeritus of Woodwinds from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada after 26 years. Paul was a founding member of the Vancouver Baroque Ensemble, music director and condutor of the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra (1972-1976), a Juno Award nominee in 2001 for Best Classical Composition ""La Cevenole"", and he revived, transcribed, and published numerous forgotten Baroque classical works. He was a performer, teacher, and composer with a passion for authentic musical expression. With his youthful influences mostly in France and North Africa, Paul was also a fervent Francophile enjoying many extended return visits to France and Switzerland for sabbatical and leisure. His second symphony, La Cevenole, was named after College Cevenole, his high school in the Auvergne region of France. He also loved building model airplanes and boats in his leisure time, a hobby enjoyed since a young boy in Constantine. Paul became a Canadian citizen in 1973 and was a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Beta Mu chapter, a professional collegiate fraternity for men with an interest in music. Paul is survived by his wife Anita Douglas, his two sons Randy and Edward, his daughter Theresa, his sister Kathryn, his brother John, and his four grandsons, Jonathan, Benjamin, Evander, and Liam. A memorial service will be held on March 12, 2011 at 10:00 am in Cranbrook, BC at McPhersons' Funeral Home. A memorial concert will be held on March 13, 2011 at 8:00pm in Vancouver, BC at the UBC School of Music Recital Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Paul M. I was fortunate to have flute lessons from Paul when attending UBC. I was thinking of him recently, while practicing an exercise he taught me, (an exercise I use on the other instruments I play). I’m still benefiting from his lessons those 45 years ago! Thank you, Paul. RIP
