Paul Fling Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2025.
Paul Andrew Fling, one of Sacramento's most recognizable and established radio voice actors and broadcast producers during an incredible half-century career, passed away on April 5 at the age of 67.

A veteran of Sacramento's airwaves for decades, Paul settled in the region in 1987, where he left his mark on nearly every aspect of local radio: directing, producing, copywriting, voice-acting and coaching on-air talent. He worked with several companies over the years, including Bonneville, Entercom and iHeartRadio.

Paul's distinctive baritone can still be heard today with commercials in rotation on Sactown Sports 1140, Mix 96 and KNCI 105.1.

Over the course of his 45-year career, Paul voiced and produced some of Sacramento and California's most memorable radio ads, including previews for numerous concerts, movies and sporting events, as well as campaigns for Mel Rapton Honda, Haggin Oaks Golf Course, Paramount Equity Mortgage, the Roseville Auto Mall, and dozens of other businesses.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1958 to a father who worked for NASA and a homemaker mother, Paul's family later relocated to Southern California, where he attended high school in Palos Verdes. Upon graduation, he broke the news to his father that, instead of enrolling in college, he would pursue a career in broadcasting.

Paul kept his word. He began studying the craft of radio in Hollywood. In 1978, he got his first break in live radio and began following the work to all corners of the state: KSLY/KUNA in San Luis Obispo, KBOS in Fresno, and KFMI in Eureka.

His first job in Sacramento was with the Brown Organization in 1987, whose Old Sacramento offices powered several Northern California frequencies. Eventually, Paul joined Entercom, where he spent 19 years overseeing all aspects of non-musical on-air audio - collaborating with voice actors, hosts, reporters and engineers to create thousands of successful radio campaigns. From 2016 to 2020, he served as director of radio production at iHeartRadio, before concluding his career at Bonneville, where he proudly worked until his final days.

Paul never wavered in his devotion to life as a Radio Man.

When he wasn't working, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren. He also made a home for several dogs, cats, reptiles - even a 10-foot boa constrictor named Victor. On weekends, you'd find Paul relaxing with a cold beer, listening to the Rolling Stones, Motorhead, and that good old-time rock 'n' roll.

Paul Fling is survived by his wife, Debbie Miller; his son James Hutcheson-Fling, wife Amanda Hutcheson-Fling, and their four children: Jacen, Hailey, Joshua, and Marcus; his son Mike Hutcheson-Fling and partner Allie Vasilakis; his stepson Nick Miller and wife Sami Gallegos; stepson Chris Miller and wife Kim Henderson; and stepson Mike Miller, wife Amy Vy, and their daughter, Evie Miller.

In lieu of flowers, please listen to the radio - and turn it up loud.

San Luis Obispo contingent checking in. I worked with Paul at KSLY from 1982-1984. He was truly one of the nice guys in the business. Patient, soft spoken, and a true professional, Paul was the epitome of what a good coworker should be.

I just heard about his passing early this morning. Makes me sad. Save a shift for me, Paul. I know you'll have all my first hour carts and music pulled for me.

Paul was one of my favorite people. He was one of my earliest supporters and a huge influence on my radio career. I enjoyed his dry humor-he and I had countless laughs together. He was one of the best production directors I ever worked with. His work was flawless. A huge loss. Love and prayers to Debbie and his boys.

Such a good man! He taught me a lot about producing commercials and would Crack Up at jokes. And he was honest. It might surprise you, but a lot of people in radio are only honest when it's convenient. Not Paul, a truly honest man and a real straight shooter. He will be missed.

So saddened to hear of Paul´s passing. I have fond memories of working with him at Brown Broadcasting and then Entercom during my days in radio. Paul was a class act; professional and an all-around good guy. Praying for comfort for the family

We worked together at Entercom for a few years and I was lucky enough to have spent some time talking in the studio from time to time. So smart, classy, edgy, kind and brilliant. Thanks for the memories, Paul.

I have only met Paul a few times but in the few that I did he was very nice and welcoming and showed me a few things about production, I really hoped to have worked with him more in the future but I'm glad to have even got the opportunity to introduce myself to him.

When I was first starting to work with Paul, I was straight out of college and to me he was the coolest guy in the building because he had a Porche 928. Throughout the decades of knowing him he remained the coolest guy because of how well he perfected his craft. He was a pleasure to work with internally and externally he provided such valuable service and product to thousands of clients and heard by countless amounts of people. I will always appreciate the time I spent with him. Thank you, Paul!

My sincerest condolences to Paul's family. I didn't know Paul well, but well enough to know -early on- that he could be relied upon, no questions asked. I hope I never put him out but, there were a few times where I didn't have all the information I probably should have for a spot that was being produced, and when I'd send an email to Paul asking for assistance, he'd always just say he would handle it. And he always did. Maybe he recognized my ineptitude. Regardless, it was always done and done. He is, for me, a case study in wishing you'd gotten to know somebody better because you figured there would always be more time... I would have loved to ask him about that snake!

Paul was so talented! He created the best commercials, in no time for the not so easy customers. I never heard Paul say, No, I don't have time, no excuses...he just got the job done. Professionally and perfectly every time! Paul will be greatly missed in the Radio and advertising community!
