Ann,
I am so sorry that we have lost such a fine person, but we know is he is with his heavenly father and at peace.
I hope you are doing well. You know I've been down the road you are on now and I understand. I will always be grateful to Dr. Hubbert for his advice and the guidance he provided, during my time on the retirement board. I also enjoyed our time together at retirement conference and my chance to get to know you. I will never forget you or Dr. Hubbard.
I will be praying for you and hope to see you sometime soon.

As a Troy State student of Dr. Hubbert's at Ft. Rucker during the Winter Quarter of 1969, I enjoyed his lecture presentations, without a textbook, in Curriculum Construction and Theory, Education 685. Although I made an A in my research paper, I was pleased to have received a B in the course since JoAnn was having some health issues during the quarter that were being addressed at the Columbus Medical Center. During the course, Dr. Hubbert was appointed Executive Secretary/Treasurer of AEA on March 1, 1969, and was able to share insights to the legislative process. Dr. Hubbert was always understanding and encouraging.
During the 1990 and 1994 races for Governor, I supported Dr. Hubbert as the best candidate and had my picture made with Dr. and Mrs. Hubbert and was honored when it was used in the Hubbert campaign literature.
Starting in October, 2001, until December, 2012, when he became unable to attend, a group of his friends had a monthly luncheon where we exchanged political views, but often listened to Dr. Hubbert's views on the meaning of certain actions by those in public office. Dr. Hubbert generally let me pick him up to travel for lunch. That gave me an opportunity to "pick his brain" for solutions to problems that I encountered. I always found him generous in sharing his expertise.
JoAnn and I joined First Christian Church in January, 2005, and enjoyed worshipping with the Hubberts at First Christian during the years 2005 till his death. Our friendship was based on a longstanding relationship of mutual respect.

Ann and family: Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on Paul's passing. I know that you know the influence his life and work had on this state. His life is an example of the impact one person can have on the lives of so many. But beyond the professional influence he had, his legacy includes a personal standard of how a life should be lived. Our lives took very different paths during the past 25 or so years, but I always looked back on the years we shared in our professional work as some of the most character-shaping years of my life. He will be missed by many. From Anne and me, please accept our sincere condolences.

Blessings to Ann and all of the family members at this sad time. I hope you will be comforted knowing that Dr. Hubbert left a legacy for all educators and all the citizens of Alabama that benefited from his tireless efforts. There are so many of us that know we are comfortable in our retirement because of Paul's vision which looked past the needs of the day for educators. Even more importantly, Paul recognized that a well educated work force was essential to a positive future for Alabama. His legacy will be with us all for years to come. My thoughts and prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

Dr. Hubbert was brave and courageous as both an advocate for public school students and teachers, and as a long term liver transplant survivor. His leadership and political skills contributed to tremendous advances in public education in a relatively short time. I am reaping the benefits of his work on the TRS Board and am grateful that I have a great Retirement System and good insurance coverage. May God bless his family and friends with peace and comfort. I was with Paul at the beginning of A_Vote, becomming the first State Chairman of A-Vote. I later became AEA president. He was the most remarkable and smartest person I had ever known in politics. We toured the state together, with Paul giving his "Politics and Pot Hole" speech, and I giving my Buscuits and Gunpower speech. I loved he and Joe Reed as brothers.
