Four years on, I miss Paul very much. I'm finally starting to compose a piece for organ (a fantasy on the hymn tune Hyfrodal) that he and I discussed in 2011. His ideas on structure and transitions were invaluable, and I shall try to use each, just as he described. RIP Paul.

For many years as the piano technician at Binghamton University (SUNY), Paul and I became good friends. I was responsible for the tuning and maintenance of the pianos and harpsichords and prepared Paul's instruments for practice and performance constantly over the many years he was a professor at Binghamton University. We would often take a lunch or dinner at the cafeteria and would end up in long discussions about music, performers. As a classical music record collector, he would offer much information about his International contacts he worked under or studied with including Helmut Walcha. Our discussions would include politics, books, and history for Paul was one of the most well-read and cultured people I knew, and a genuine friend. I was very sorry to learn of Paul's passing and post this long after his death while browsing online.

I have only come to know of his passing now, having looked for him for many years. I studied recorder privately with him when I was 14 and lived in New York. Those were my only music lessons, till I moved to India and studied dance and music. His grounding and confidence sustained me since all those years ago.
He was 19, and already recorded. I have many old LPs on which he played. He was a cheerful young man, and hung out with me and my brother for long conversations on all manner of subjects. So talented. The last time I saw him, he played an organ recital. We were leaving NY and my restless younger siblings made us leave, and I never said good bye.
Such a person! He has been in my mind all these years with the fondest of thoughts. Why is it only when the obituaries come out that we find our lost friends? My condolences to his family.

Much of the music we studied with Paul in Collegium Musicum, at Harpur College, remains alive in me today - Buxtehude's setting of Psalm 116, some of Moondog's cycle of rounds around the scales, small pieces by friends and composers he championed, with his exquisite German coaching, a piece performed outdoors amongst fall leaves - all vibrant to me, as is he. This elegant obituary barely scratches the surface of Paul's Gestalt. He was a man of rare genius. I claim him as teacher, mentor, and dear friend. My life is less for the loss of him.

A wonderful man, who was as committed to expressing his political ideals, in word and action, as he was to interpreting the music of Bach.
He was a close friend of William Sloan Coffin and prided himself on his participation in the civil rights and anti-war movements that defined their era.

I am so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. He was a fine musician and I was lucky enough to have sung with him and to have listened to his beautiful music. May his passion for music live on in those of us who shared this love with him.
