Paul Kalland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2021.
Kalland Paul Leonard Age 65 Paul Leonard Kalland, 65, died in a car accident May 31, 2021, which was both Memorial Day and the day before his 41 st wedding anniversary. He was on the way home from taking a drive on a beautiful afternoon in his beloved 1981 280Z Datsun, most likely to be followed by a beverage and cigar on the back deck listening to vintage music. He died at the scene. Paul retired from American Airlines with 35 years of service the previous June as a 777 Captain based at JFK with international routes to Europe and South America; his favorite destination was Barcelona. He previously flew the 767/757, MD-80, 737 and 727, based in DCA, San Diego and Chicago. He was also a CDR US Navy Reserve (Ret.). He graduated from Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola and then completed flight training and received his wings in Corpus Christi, where he met Kathy. He later flew the E-2C, UC-12B, C-9B and other aircraft with various squadrons and assignments in San Diego, Coronado and Corpus Christi. As a reservist, he was activated for Desert Storm with VR-57 to Germany. Paul was born June 30, 1955, in Minneapolis. He graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, with a major in Business and a minor in German. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Kathy) Vine Kalland; his daughter, Sarah Kalland McLoughlin, and her husband, Anthony, daughter, Nora, and son, Conor; and his son, Robert Vine Kalland, and his partner, Mary Caitlyn Hooker. He is also survived by his younger brother Kurt Peter Kalland and his family, and many other extended family members. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Michael Kalland; mother, Frances Thill Kalland; and older brother, Robert Michael Kalland, Jr. The family greatly appreciates the outpouring of love, support and so much more from everyone who knew Paul from his Minnesota upbringing and education, naval and American Airlines careers, church communities, life in Fairfax Station and San Diego, travel around the world, and varied interests and activities. Paul and Kathy often reminisced about and were so thankful for all the wonderful people in their lives. There will be a memorial service at 1 pm, Wed., June 30 – Paul's 66 th birthday – at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Rd., Fairfax, Va. A reception on site will follow. Interment at Quantico National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate fond remembrances of Paul, as well as honoring his memory with love for our God and country and your family and friends. And, in the course of your day put a smile on someone's face. If you would like to make a donation in his memory, please do so to the charity of your choice. For the brief time that Kathy and Paul were in San Diego, we enjoyed their gatherings and I had a great time picking Paul's brain about his flying experiences. It is difficult to have time to console one's soul. He is one soul that can't be easily forgotten. Our blessings to Kathy and family.

I retired from AA in March and when I think of Paul a smile always crosses my face as I recall all the great times we had flying to Europe together. He also taught me a lot about being an airline captain. Paul was a great gentleman and a true professional in the air! Many Blessings to the Kalland family on this difficult anniversary.

My condolences to Paul's family. I was Paul's FO on many flights on the 757 and 767 in the late '90s and early 2000's. I liked him a lot. He was a great teacher and mentor. I learned a lot from him. I am grateful to have known him.

I was a bridesmaid in Paul & Kathy's wedding 40 years ago in Minnesota. I remember thinking that Paul looked so handsome in his Navy uniform in their wedding! Kathy and Paul were a happy couple and enjoyed entertaining. I fondly remember some of their parties in Virginia. Paul was taken from us much too soon. Hugs to Kathy and their children, Sarah, and Robert.

I flew with Paul on the 767/757 out of DCA. I always looked forward to every trip, because there were no bad trips with Paul. Whenever you were around him you could not help but notice his infectious good nature and charm. Something negative happen, and I would start to say, "Well,..." and he would interject, "Yes, deep subjects for shallow minds." He would tap that positive energy that was so visible at all times.

To Kathy and his family, we share a very small part of the tragic loss you are experiencing. You have my deepest condolences for your loss. The time he spent on the road, touched and brightened the trips of so many of us. He was an outstanding aviator and a shining example that I try to emulate.

I have made a contribution to the Fauquier County 4-H Bow Benders and Air Pistol Club to support Shooting Sports among the youth of Northern Virginia.

Paul was the best and I loved flying with him on the 757 in Washington. I will always remember debrief times with him. A cigar and a drink was always offered. He will be missed. My condolences to the entire family.

I was so sad to hear of Paul's passing. I miss him terribly. He always was smiling and he was always helpful. I know this has to be awful for Kathy, Sara, and Robert. My Brian was in Robert's class. We send our love and wish you peace. It is good to know he is in God's arms even if for us it was much too soon. I hope you are enjoying your new flight path and looking out for us down here like you always did. God knew what a breath of sunshine you were and after this year we have had maybe he needed you up there to cheer him up. Your smile was a Godly gift. I will never forget it or you. Please rest in peace. I will miss you.

Paul and I met on November 22, 1977, our first day at Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School. After our time in the Navy, our paths crossed regularly as we both worked at American Airlines.
He was a true brother this whole time, and I always looked forward to his smile and dry wit.
Peace to Kathy and the family. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

I flew many years with Paul on the 767 out of IAD. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face, was ALWAYS positive and easy-going and never seemed to have a bad day. He was our captain on a friend’s retirement trip and surprised us all by getting a separate room at our layover hotel and ordered snacking food and wine to celebrate! What a wonderful memory for us and such a genuinely kind gesture on his part!! Truly a genuinely kind and great person to have on our side!! And one of the BEST pilots I’ve had the pleasure of working with! Thank you for the memories, Paul!

I remember Paul and his Brother Kurt from Mount Olivet Church and C.O.P being on workstaff in the late 70's. His quick wit and humor were things no one will ever forget. Between his and his family's commitment to God and Mount Olivet will always live on.
My wish is for God's arms to wrap around your family and keep you strong, Paul was many things but he was always a child of God.
i'm so Sorry for your loss

I worked a number of trips to Europe with Paul and when I saw that he was the captain, I knew we would have a good time. He was a gentleman, a family man, a man of God, a history buff, a Patriot, and an aviation pro - always a pleasure to be around. Heaven is made brighter by his presence, but a big loss to the Kalland family and friends!

Paul, although I never knew you, my gut tells me that you were a role model for your “little brother” Kurt who I first met some years ago when he served as a Police Chaplin with the Edina Police Department, and for whom I have absolute respect. I know you shared a love of fine firearms and shooting, as became Kurts and mine common ground, along with fine cigars. I lament the fact that we never did meet, as I believe you would have “clicked” with me as your little brother did so effortlessly.
May you have Eternal Peace brother.

Kathy, words cannot express the sadness with Paul's passing. We do hold your family up in prayer and know the hope we have in Jesus.

Great is the joy of heaven - which we cannot even fathom. Paul trusted Jesus as his Savior and is in heaven. That is the joy we have. He has gone before us and his memory will be long. I will miss him with our trip to the lake. I am so thankful for knowing him.

God Bless You!

I knew Paul well throughout the last 25 years of our careers together at
American Airlines. Paul always put a smile on my face, and for that I am grateful. May God rest his soul, until we meet again,

This is such a tragic event. Paul was a talented aviator serving his country and bringing passengers safely to their destinations aboard his AA airliners. I loved chatting with him during our neighborhood encounters. Paul and Kathy were always a welcome couple. I looked forward to seeing Paul. My blessings to this great guy.

I knew Paul as a fellow AA crew member at the DCA base. We also spent a few days hunting together at our friend Steve Egge's property in VA. We also corresponded via e-mail. I will miss hearing from him and send my heartfelt condolences and prayers to all of his family members. I would attend the memorial but will be out of town on that date.

Enjoyed flying with Paul. Was fortunate to be DCA Chairman at a time when when Paul was Captain on the Super 80. A favorite of mine.
