Paul Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 7 to Apr. 9, 2009.
Paul Gerald Miller Our beloved father, grandfather, friend and most special "Poppy" passed away peacefully in sleep at home on April 3rd, 2009. He was 75. "Jerry" was born to Paul A. Miller and Vivian E. Miller in San Rafael on July 22nd 1933. He grew up in San Rafael, graduated from San Rafael High School in 1951, where he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and football under the coaching direction of his father. He graduated from, and played baseball for, College of Marin, and then went into the Army where he was stationed in Fort Ord, Fort Knox and Germany. Upon his return he graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in business. It was there where he met his loving wife of 44 years, Margaret, who passed away six years ago after a long illness. Jerry devoted himself to Margaret during her illness, cared for her at home in every way, including creating a secret garden that she could view from her window when she could no longer go outside. He began his career in business in the shipping industry in San Francisco and was a sales manager for many divisions of McLean Industries including Sea Land and K-Line where he was responsible for national and international shipping. For over 20 years Jerry was Vice President of Consolidated Imports, an international import/ export company also based in San Francisco. To be closer to home he began his own company in 1980 where he specialized in the importing and exporting of gourmet food products. He truly enjoyed his local San Rafael business and retired in 2004 after 25 years. Jerry loved to travel and explore. He enjoyed extended family trips to Europe, the Caribbean, National Parks, and especially long cruise adventures. He was a California history buff, enjoyed reading, bingo, gold panning, yachting, birding and especially gardening. He created his own park-like garden sanctuary affectionately known as Miller Park that he dedicated to his grandchildren. He was quite handy around the house and enjoyed many do-it-yourself projects. Jerry had a fabulous smile and a wonderful sense of humor, and was always there to help the underdog. His generosity and kind heart touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his adoring daughters, Pamela Miller Erickson, and Paula Miller Maxfield, sons-in-law Bill Erickson and Bill Maxfield, granddaughters, Savana and Ginger Maxfield, brother Harry Miller, brother-in-law Bob Sellers and his loyal four-legged companion Jack. Visitation is Friday, April 10th from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Monte's Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo. Interment is private at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Audubon Canyon Ranch, 4900 Highway One, Stinson Beach, CA 94970 or Santa Cruz Education Foundation, PO Box 8501, Santa Cruz, CA 95061-8501 or a charity of your choice. Jerry Miller was a true gentleman and a great person to know. He and his family were my family's neighbors on Sea Way for over 40 years. His kindness to my family from my father to my sons when they all lived across the street was always over and beyond being a "neighbor". He was like family to all of us. I have missed in the recent years the debates that we would have regarding all walks of life. Jerry you will be missed but not forgotten. My thoughts and prayers to Pamela and Paula

I haven't seen Jerry in over 50 years but, in hearing of his passing, many old memories rushed to the forefront...we played sports together under his dad, coach "Mill"..Jerry was often put in charge of Harry on away games, when we traveled on the bus..one very funny memory re: Harry comes to mind...we had traveled to Sebastopol to play Analy HS..while walking down the main street of town, Harry was walking backwards, acting-out with a typical 10-year old's rhetoric to the team and, when he turned around, he ran into a signpost that knocked him down...we all laughed so hard, we cried...now that Jerry is gone, I hope that his family and Harry's family will cherish a lot of good memories...my condolences and best wishes to all ...Tom
