RUPERT, Paul S C A
August 6th, 1946 - December 29th, 2013
It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the sudden passing of one of North America's foremost Canadian artists of natural realism.
Paul will be forever missed by his wife and best friend, Agi (nee Stettner). Fiercely proud father to Jayson (Cailin), Vanessa, Maxine (Chris), Phil (Alexie) and devoted companion to Oly Bear. Son of the late Kenneth and Edith Rupert; brother to Marc (deceased). Brother- in-law to Toni and Steve Naday, uncle to Stephanie and Nicky.
Paul obtained his formal training at the school of art and design of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he studied under the late Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven) and at Concordia University. His unique use of the palette knife and oil paints earned him worldwide recognition in such noted collections as: Royal Bank of Canada, Corby's Distilleries, International Bankers Club in Hong Kong, Molson Breweries, Montreal Stock Exchange, Canadian Embassy in Washington, Governments of Alberta and Ontario, Canada House and Ontario House in London, England, The National Gallery, The Claridge Collection, Lower Canada College and many others.
Paul was commissioned to paint many of North America's renowned golf courses including The Royal Montreal Golf Club, The Shaughnessy Golf Club in Vancouver, Nicklaus North, Chateau Whistler, and The Augusta National Golf Club.
Visitation will be held January 10th, 2014 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White; 222, Autoroute 20, Pointe-Claire, Quebec, H9S 3X6. A service in his memory will take place on January 11th at 1 p.m. Beaurepaire United Church, 25 Fieldfare Avenue, Beaconsfield, Quebec, H9W 4W4.
The family would like to thank Teresa Dellar and the staff of the West Island Palliative Care Residence for their exceptional kindness and compassion.
Donations in Paul's memory may be made to the West Island Palliative Care Residence.

I'm so sorry to read of Paul's passing. His brother, Marc, was a very dear friend and we met with Paul quite often before Marc's death. His dad and mom were always so welcoming. My family loved seeing Paul's paintings of Fritz' Farm in Baie d'Urfe, as this was just across the way from my childhood home and brought back many memories. My sincerest condolences to Paul's family.

My deepest belated condolences.
Paul was the only one to ever throw a pie in my face at the WITC, and still today this makes me chuckle.
Very sorry to read he passed away at such an young age.

We recently heard of Paul's passing. Sincere sympathy to Agi and the whole family. Paul was a wonderful and patient and humorous soccer coach to our daughter as he coached The Peaches. We have several of his prints to remind us of his outstanding artistic talents as well. Those prints help keep Montreal scenes alive for us as well.
We are very fortunate, indeed, to have had the opportunity to have our lives touched by knowing Paul.He will be missed on so many levels.

My deepest condolences. I spoke with Paul before Christmas and have been meaning to drop off a calendar at your door. I was with Mare today and she told me the news. I was shocked. I still am. Paul was so down to earth and funny and an amazing artist. I have an original that belonged to my Dad and many prints. I can not believe he is gone. Bless his soul and your family.

I was at Beaurepaire United, the church was packed, there were no more seats, Paul was so loved, I was crying, and I will cry again, for I loved the man and I loved his paintings and his love of nature and the world. Please God hold him tight in your bosom for all of us on earth.

To Agi, Max and family,

I am still in shock after hearing of Paul's passing. We shared many laughs over the several years that Paul coached Erin (Air Bear) and Max. I wish I could have been there to give you my condolences in person, but I am working in Toronto now. I am so happy that I have several pieces of Paul's beautiful artwork, they will continue to be an homage to him in my home on my special Paul Rupert wall....I am so truly saddened by this sudden loss of such a great man, Agi,I wish you strength and peace in this difficult time, just know that my thoughts are with you and the family.

My sincerest condolences to Paul's family and friends.
I got to know Paul over the last 4 years. We would have great discussions when he brought his faithful companion, Olly Bear in to see me for his check ups. A tremendous kindness shone through Paul's eyes and I was always enthralled by the stories he would recount. He left a lasting impression on me. The world is a whole lot poorer to have lost such a talented, compassionate man. Wishing all those he left behind the strength and courage to get through this difficult time. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Agi ......My sincere condolences to you and the family.

I first met Paul when he was a Montreal Star delivery boy and my Mom was the Dorval depot lady on Lepage Avenue, in the late 1950s. We lost touch with Paul. Then, in about 1968-1970 Paul used to give me lifts home from SGWU at least until the day we walked to where he had parked his motorcycle, only to find only a few links of chain on the ground. (bike stolen)

Life has a way of taking us in different directions.

Daily, I enjoy two of Paul's original works that remind me of his incredible talent. I will always treasure them.

I am so sorry.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this terribly sad time. Paul and I attended High school together some 50+ years ago and I so thrilled when I learned about his wonderful painting career and have been following it ever since. I was very fortunate to have been able to meet with him and sit down for a catch-up a year or so ago and will now value this few short hours even more. He was a very talented man and he will be missed by so many.
God bless and may He give you strength to get through this painful time.

To Paul's family: my wife and I are deeply saddened to hear of Paul's passing. We were his neighbours back in 1975 in Dorval. That year I had the privilege of helping Paul issue and frame some of his earliest limited edition prints (Dominion Square and Windsor Station). The last time we talked was back in 1986 and I had hoped that we would someday be able to reconnect. Please accept our deepest sympathies.

One only had to glance at a painting by Paul Rupert to be 'blown away' by his extraordinary artistic talent and upon meeting him his overwhelming generosity of spirit.
It was the mid 70's when Barbara Lewis of Gullivers dropped unannounced into our offices at 2 Bloor St. west, Toronto and invited us to view an exhibition of his work and meet the artist himself in the foyer of our building at Bloor & Yonge. We couldn't resist the opportunity and the rest is history. Over the years we have become the proud owners of several paintings, prints and reproductions. All adorned our offices and now in retirement proudly the walls of our home.
We have never forgotten the down-to-earth genius called Paul Rupert who carpentered his own frames and seemed so unassuming of his own remarkable talent.
Our most sincere sympathies to his wife Agi, his sons and daughters and the hundreds of friends and acquaintances who were privileged to have crossed his path as were we.
God bless .......

It is with a heavy heart, that I wish to extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to the entire Rupert family. To my longtime LCC classmate and friend, Phil, your dad was just one of those special people you meet in life, that stay etched in ones memory for a lifetime.
I have fond memories of your dad being a proud and supportive parent, often cheering us on at hockey and soccer games throughout our years at LCC. I was lucky enough to bump into your dad at the RMGC 2 years ago, we had a nice chat about you and your sister, Maxine, who works at LCC.
Your dad was an incredibly talented artist, but even more importantly, he was an incredible human being. His ever present smile, humour and kind soul will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, may you all find the strength to get through this very difficult time.
