Paul was a beloved member of the Class of 1960, Boiling Springs High School in Pennsylvania. So proud of his achievements, especially coming from a small school. There were 72 class members including Paul, as well as college professors, attorneys, geologists, business owners, farmers, many teachers and professionals along with nurses, and talented office personnel. We are fortunate to claim this as our heritage.

I was very saddened to hear recently of Dr. Samuelson´s death in 2023 and offer my condolences for his family. He was retiring from UAB after a long and successful career around the time that I moved to Birmingham from Johns Hopkins University, but I had the honor to meet him twice in person at departmental functions over the years. As the second holder of the William A. Lell, M.D. - Paul N. Samuelson, M.D. Endowed Professorship in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, which was established in his and Dr. Lell´s name, I am immensely grateful for the endowment support of my research program on chronic pain in women (with a special emphasis on chronic pelvic pain and pain in breast cancer survivors) at UAB. My thoughts are with your family.

I had the privilege of having Paul as roommate in our Freshman year at Antioch College. I was immediately impressed with his wonderful personality, intellect, and energy in life. We spent many late hours in the biology lab doing crazy and fun experiments by ourselves. Our senior year we co-authored perhaps his first paper: "Wunce eye kuddent spell Fuzician, and Now I are won". He was a special friend, man and doctor, for sure

Paul and I were best buddies in high school. All throughout junior and senior lifesaving, academics, DeMolay, and Boy Scouts, we were best of friends. Boy Scout experiences included the National Jamboree, Philmont Scout Ranch, and the most memorable of all, receiving our Eagle Scout awards on the same night with our mothers participating (pic attached). He was a good man.

I went to high school with Paul. He was a nice guy and so smart.
May he rest in peace.

I remember when you were a kid, and Grandpa took you fishing up in Iron Mountain. You were so proud to catch a fish. We shared wonderful grandparents, Bess and David Confeld. May his memory be for a blessing.

Paul was a close friend for many years while we lived in Birmingham and later when we moved to Mobile. We had many sailing adventures together with David and Marc in the Carribean. He will be missed.

I will always carry fond memories of Dr. Samuelson from my time in his WeBeLo troop and the following years in Troop 86. To this day, earning the Arrow of Light, my Eagle Scout Award and being inducted into the Order of the Arrow remain among my proudest accomplishments. Dr. Samuelson exemplified the Boy Scout motto and was always prepared.

May his memory be for a blessing.

I am sorry to hear this today about Dr. Paul Samuelson.

I worked with his wife, Dr. Carole, while she was Jefferson County Health Officer until I retired in 1994.
