The funeral service for Dr. Paul Shaffer will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at First United Methodist Church in Claremore with Dr. Ray Crawford officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., at Bluff Cemetery, Springdale, Ark. Services are under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service and Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday 2-8 p.m.; family will greet friends 4-6 p.m.Dr. Shaffer, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Claremore Regional Hospital.The son of Clint Albert and Mary Helen (Flaucher) Shaffer was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Lamont, Iowa. Dr. Shaffer and Caroline Jane Schneider were married Aug. 21, 1956 in Springdale, Ark. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa and both his Master of Arts Degree and Doctorate from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. For over twenty years he taught in Springdale and Bentonville, Arkansas Public Schools. A consummate professor of Mass Communications, Dr. Shaffer taught graduate and undergraduate courses for sixteen years at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. He also worked as a professional in broadcasting. He began teaching at Rogers State University in Claremore in 2000, where he was a professor of Mass Communication, before retiring in 2005. Dr. Shaffer is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Claremore, Broadcast Education Association, International Radio and Television Society, Society of Professional Journalists, Sons of the American Revolution (Tulsa Chapter, Oklahoma Society), Phi Kappa Phi, University of Arkansas Alumni Association, and Drake University Alumni Association.Dr. Shaffer is survived by his wife Caroline and sons David J. Shaffer, Broken Arrow, Okla. and Scott F. Shaffer, Seattle, Wash.; sister, Shirley Helen Stock, Boone, Iowa; and grandchildren: Mallory, Marshall, Spencer and Stuart Perryman, and Lauren Shaffer.He is preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Shaffer Perryman.
