Paul Edward Shield, 79, died Aug. 6, 2010. He was born in Medford, Mass., and lived in Brattleboro. He was a winter resident of North Hutchinson Island. He graduated from St. Michael's High School, Brattleboro, in 1949 and from Boston College in 1953 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was an Army veteran, serving as an artillery officer with the 3rd Battery. He was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant. Before retirement, he was co-owner of Fleming Oil Co. in Brattleboro. He was named Person of the Year by the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce in 1955. He served as president of Southern Vermont Health Foundation, the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital's fundraising arm, for 10 years. He was on the board of the Thompson House for 20 years and was a trustee of Burlington Savings Bank and a director of the Bank of Vermont and Key Bank of Vermont. He served on the board of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corp., the board of Listers and was a representative Town Meeting member. He also served as a member of the Draft Board (Selective Service). He was was a longtime communicant, lector and former Parish Council member at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council 917. He coached youth baseball and was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Elaine; daughter, Anne Valgoi of Alpharetta, Ga.; sons, Paul Shield Jr. of New York, William Shield of Mansfield, Mass., Joseph Shield of Avon, Conn., Francis Shield of Spofford, N.H., and Daniel Shield of Mansfield; sister, Marie Mallat of Keene, N.H.; brothers, William Shield of Norwood, Mass., and Philip Shield of Burlington, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Kenneth and George. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 47 Walnut St., Brattleboro, VT 05301. Services: Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Brattleboro. A Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at the church with the Rev. Richard O'Donnell, pastor, and the Rev. William Sheehan, former pastor, officiating. Burial and committal rites with full military honors will follow at St. Michael's Parish Cemetery.Arrangements are by Atamaniuk Funeral Home.A guestbook is available at atamaniuk.com.
