Paul Stackpole Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 8, 2025.
Paul W. Stackpole, Sr., 91, passed away on January 25, 2025 in Fort Myers, Florida. Paul was born on March 20, 1933 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and grew up in Watertown, Massachusetts where he attended local schools. He excelled in Basketball, Football and Baseball at Watertown High School and subsequently played football at Brandeis University. In 2010 Paul was elected to the Watertown Sports Hall of Fame. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years as a Hospital Corpsman and was assigned to the First Marine Division deploying to Japan and Korea during the Korean War. He was employed for many years as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Bristol Laboratories in Connecticut. Paul was a Cub Scout leader in Glastonbury, Connecticut and coached Little League and youth basketball. He received both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Hartford. After receiving his master's degree Paul became a counselor and educator working with at risk youths in Hartford, Connecticut, San Francisco, California and Jacksonville, Florida. Paul retired in 1997 and taught English as a second language part time in Tucson, Arizona.

Paul remained an athlete throughout his life and competed in eighteen marathons including three Boston Marathons. His best marathon time came in 1981 when he finished the Boston Marathon in a time of 3:15. Paul was an avid hiker and took many treks into the back country of New England and California. In 1975 Paul hiked the entire 273 mile Long Trail through Vermont's Green Mountains. He was an accomplished photographer who created incredible images that will forever remain as part of his legacy. Paul was an avid sports fan. He particularly enjoyed college and NBA basketball; most notably the Boston Celtics. During his retirement Paul resided in Arizona and Florida and remained quite active hiking and walking with his wife Gail and their dogs, running and riding his bicycle. He and Gail traveled extensively throughout the country in their motor home. They ultimately settled in Fort Myers in 2018. Paul leaves his wife Gail of Fort Myers, Florida, their dog Winky and his son Paul Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee.

I think I still have to call you Mr. Stackpole, and don't know if your son shared with you the adventures in your company car, which I believe as an AMC Matador. Not sure you ever truly knew how that car handled on icy roads. You were truly a great guy and a part of my growing up, may God bless you and I will plant a tree for you.
