Paul Sutherland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2018.
Paul Clifford Sutherland Jr. "PC", 57, of Gloucester passed away in his home after a long courageous battle on Sunday July 22nd, 2018 with his loving family and lifelong friends by his side. He was the husband of Mary Jo (Silveira) Sutherland with whom he shared 32 years of marriage. PC was born on September 6th, 1960 in Ft. Knox Kentucky. He is the son of the late Paul Clifford Sutherland Sr. and Marjorie (Coull) Sutherland. He was raised in a military family and was a proud Army brat. The family traveled all over the world as his dad received new assignments. He resided in Gloucester for most of his life and was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1979. PC went on to take courses in electrical wiring and piloting seamanship and worked at Gloucester Engineering as a mechanical assembler where he was part of a crew who traveled to build towers for extruder machines. He retired from Gloucester Engineering after working there for over 30 years. PC loved being on the water whether it was fishing or lobstering on the "Touch of Gray" with his good friend Scott Horne. In his early years he was a member of Limulus Diving Club of Cape Ann and went on many diving excursions including places such as Florida and the Caribbean. He was a devoted family man who loved spending time with friends and family at cookouts, cracking a cold Budweiser in his garage, driving his tractor and not only cutting his own lawn, but those of neighbors as well. He even gave the kids (and sometimes adults) tractor rides in the wagon. PC shared many good memories with special neighbors Dan and Heidi Labrecque including trips to NH and Storyland with the kids. A family tradition started between the Sutherland and the Rose family with a re-gifting of THE Hawaiian shirt, a long standing joke amongst the two families. It was decided to end the re-gifting rotation with PC and let it go with him. He was a handy man who could come up with a solution to fix anything that was broken – a true jack of all trades. PC loved his house that he worked so hard to have and always enjoyed having a good time. He will always be remembered for his comical personality and ability to make people laugh. PC enjoyed tuna fishing on the Mellon and especially loved participating in the Lanes Cove bluefish tournament as it always fell on his birthday week. He also enjoyed surprising his kids with gifts such as the notorious four wheeler. Other hobbies he enjoyed were playing golf, camping, skiing, collecting G.I. Joes, building model boats, cars, and Army models. In addition to his loving wife Mary Jo, PC is survived by his daughter Lauren N. Sutherland, his son Paul C. Sutherland III, both of Gloucester, his sisters Roberta A. Aptt and her husband Kenneth and Ellen M. Flaherty all of Gloucester, and his brother Peter A. Sutherland of Salisbury. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law Lucia and Gerald Silveira of Gloucester, his brother-in-law John Silveira and his wife Brenda of Gloucester, his close cousins Kenny Hubbard and Eileen Burnham of Gloucester, as well as many other cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends, and his loyal dog Copper. PC's Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish in St. Ann's Church, Prospect St. Gloucester on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In honoring with PC's wishes there will be no visiting hours and burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers donations in PC' memory may be made to the Cape Ann Animal Aide, 4 Paws Lane Gloucester, MA 01930.
