Paul Winfrey Hofheinz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2025.
Paul Winfrey Hofheinz, a distinguished journalist, thought leader, and intellectual, died on 25 April after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 62.

Paul spent his childhood in Texas, the firstborn child of a prominent family. His grandfather, Roy Hofheinz, built the Houston Astrodome, and his father, Fred Hofheinz, served two terms as mayor of Houston. While Paul was always proud of his origin, he was determined to chart his own path, across the Atlantic in a place he loved throughout his life: Europe.

A Yale-trained historian and scholar of Soviet Studies with a Master's degree from the London School of Economics, his first passion was the Soviet Union, where he worked as a journalist for Time Magazine before the fall of the Iron Curtain. A fluent Russian speaker, he had a lifelong fascination with other cultures, political systems, and economic regimes. But he was always steadfast in his defense of freedom, democracy, tolerance, and humanity. It was this conviction that led him to stay in Russia in the early 1990s, despite the turmoil of the dying days of the Soviet Union, trying to steer the country towards a pluralistic, rules-based system. It was painful for him to see his beloved Russia turn towards authoritarianism under the current regime – something that Paul foresaw long before things took a turn for the worse.

Seeing the potential of a still-nascent but growing European Union in the late 1990s, he decided to relocate to Brussels after a brief stint in Bonn, Germany, where he ran the Europe bureau for Fortune Magazine. In Europe's capital, he made a name for himself at the Wall Street Journal, covering financial markets and regulation.

In 2002, he attended the Central and Eastern Europe Summit of the World Economic Forum in Salzburg, Austria, where he met his future wife, Ann. Benefiting from Paul's entrepreneurial acumen, which he gained from founding and running the publication Central European Economic Review while based in Moscow, the two decided to start a think tank in Brussels with the mission to 'Make Europe Fit for the Future'. Dubbed the Lisbon Council, the organization kicked off activities in the autumn of 2003, leading Paul to dedicate his future professional life to helping Europe advance its performance in technology, innovation, and competitiveness.

A US citizen based in Europe, he competently straddled political debates on both sides of the Atlantic and often had an important mediating role between the two. His ability to bring the right interlocutors together, around the most pressing issues and in an environment of candid but respectful exchange, is unmatched. As a gifted orator and an empowering intellectual, he was a sought-after speaker and valued advisor. Reporting on Paul's passing, Politico described him as a 'Brussels legend'.

In his private life, Paul was a loving and devoted father to his two sons, who both were his center of gravity as he tried to instill his own intellectual curiosity and extensive knowledge onto the next generation. Growing up in a house full of books – from history and the arts to politics and technology - Ann routinely referred to Paul as a 'walking encyclopedia'.

Despite his cancer diagnosis, Paul continued to engage professionally, with great enthusiasm and in full dedication to the Lisbon Council. Two weeks prior to his death, Paul still chaired a fireside chat with John Collison, co-founder and president of Stripe, one of Europe's most successful tech startups. It was a wonderful, special culmination of a successful, multi-faceted, and prosperous life and career.

Paul never gave up hope and fought courageously until the very end. He got a brief respite from the disease when he entered a clinical trial for a phase 1 drug, which worked wonders for six months, in which Paul took his beloved sons on two trips to the United States and the family visited many places throughout Europe which Paul cherished and wanted to visit one last time. It was an invaluable gift for which all family members were incredibly grateful.

Paul died peacefully at UZ Leuven hospital, surrounded by his family. Paul is survived by his wife, Ann Mettler, and sons, Lennart and Aiden of Brussels, Belgium; his loving parents, father, Fred Hofheinz, and wife, Linda of Houston, Texas, and mother, Elizabeth Hofheinz of Austin, Texas, and numerous nephews and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Tracey Virginia Hofheinz Montauriol of Paris, France.

The family wishes to thank all nurses and doctors at UZ Leuven, where Paul received world-class, compassionate care. In particular, they extend their gratitude to Prof. Gertjan Rascchaert, Prof. Oliver Bechter, and Dr. Aude Van Oosterwyck, outstanding oncologists who fought tirelessly for Paul's life and comfort, as well as Alexandra Verhagen, who supported the family and Paul in particular in their mental wellbeing on this arduous journey. Deep appreciation also goes to the staff and associates of the Lisbon Council, in particular David Osimo and Tjark de Lange. As one of the co-founders, Ann is delighted that David will go on to lead the organization, which is now in its 22nd year of operation. He and his team will undoubtedly excel and take the organization to its next level and future milestones. Finally, warm recognition and heartfelt thanks go to Lillia 'Lily' Cava, who selflessly helped to care for Paul and was always there for him, even in the most challenging moments.

A celebration of life in loving memory of Paul will be held at the Residence Palace in Brussels on Thursday, 8 May. The family kindly requests that any floral tributes be replaced with donations to a charity in support of Ukraine..

Liebe Ann,

My sincere condolences to Ann, Leinart, Aiden, Paul's family. While I have known Paul right from the start of the Lisbon Council, I didn´t know how serious his condition was and his passing away came as a total shock. The world has lost one of the brightest minds I have ever known. Rest in peace, dear Paul.

I had the privilege of meeting Paul Hofheinz and Ann Mettler when they founded the Lisbon Council in 2003. From the very beginning, Paul impressed me with his vision, energy, and deep sense of purpose. He was a passionate believer in Europe - in its potential, its people, and the power of coming together to shape a better, more competitive future. He had a remarkable gift for connecting ideas and individuals, and for inspiring those around him to think bigger, act bolder, and care more deeply.

Beyond his professional achievements, I also knew Paul as a devoted father. I still remember the days we´d bump into each other at Bebe Maestro classes - those delightfully chaotic gatherings where toddlers banged drums and waved scarves with wild enthusiasm. Paul was always right there in the middle of it, laughing, clapping along, fully in the moment. He radiated joy in those sessions - you could tell how much he treasured that time with his kids.

It is incredibly sad to see him go. My deepest condolences to Ann, their children, and to everyone who knew and loved Paul. He was truly one of a kind - and he will be so deeply missed.

Paul was a great friend and a magnificent person. We had many good times together. He was one of the very few college friends who went to the trouble to attend my wedding in 1995 in Berlin, and I still have vivid memories of his presence there. Absolutely gutted to hear this news. My warmest condolences to his family.

I first met Ann and Paul back in the early 2000s when we were all early stage EU bubble entrepreneurs. Paul had an uncanny and rare ability to give dynamism through his writing, speaking and moderation to issues that would typically be considered pretty dry and the preserve of policy wonks.

He also taught me about his beloved baseball - both the rules and the culture - while watching his eldest and my youngest get to grips with this complex sport over several recent summers. 'And by the way', to use his inimitable phrase, he was also great company. Best wishes and love to Ann, Aiden and Lennart.

At Yale, I admired Paul for always listening and focusing so intently and warmly, whether facing a deadline or clowning around. It was fantastic to see first-hand that many of his great qualities and energies were intact at a 2023 reunion of friends from The New Journal. My deep sympathies to all family and friends.

Paul was for me always a source of optimism, belief in the power of creativity, and a source of inspiration to fight for removing barriers to unleashing this creative power. Particularly in the current times, Paul will be very much missed.
But I'm convinced that Paul not only inspired me and will continue to do so in future, but that he also moved many others. Paul, you will always be with us...

This is so hard to believe - impossible, really. Paul was a crucial and indispensible and always-wonderful part of my early years in London during the 1980s, and his infectious laugh was as joyous as was his boundless enthusiasm for this new overseas life on which we were both embarked. We had so many good times popping into one another's Hampstead abodes, and discovering the pubs and parks and theatres of London. His engagement with the world was such that I learned so very much from him as well, and his wit was accompanied, always, by wisdom and compassion. Once Paul moved to Brussels, I was aware of his achievements mostly - and always admiringly - through Facebook, and send my profoundest condolences to his family. He is much missed, and was much loved.

Hampton and I have such fond memories of Paul's wonderfully mischievous side, as well as his remarkable intelligence and wonderful gift of language. He has made such an indelible mark on the world, helping to shape our thinking about democracy, how it is both flawed and perfect-still the best idea anyone's come up with thus far. Oh, I just want to convey my sorrow to Paul's family. I was a classmate of his at Yale. We were in the same college, and I remember intense conversations back then, and then we'd ended up being back in touch about ten years ago, after I'd written an upsetting piece about someone (also at Yale) with schizophrenia, and he'd confided a fair amount about his upsetting experience with his fiancee, and also his relief at finding someone his love and the chance to have two children, his Aidan and Lennart, and I have a son also named Aidan. I am glad he got that great pleasure in his life on top of his impressive work. We ended up exchanging thoughts about Tim Snyder, Ukraine, a range of things, and he was kind enough to read some of my work (I am a writer, too). My heart goes out to his family. I wish I could somehow make this not true, and if I'd known he was sick, I would certainly wanted to let him know how much I enjoyed simply being in conversation with him through the years. A smart and thoughtful man. Heartbreaking.

Dear Ann, what a sad and tragic loss. It is about 20 years ago that I got to know Paul and you and we have had some remarkable collaborations over the years, along with memories that I will forever cherish. Paul was such a unique, warm, intelligent and "common interest" focused professional and friend... The work on climate, sustainability, innovation and competitiveness also had its 'recreational' moments, one of these was when we were together at Al Gore's Live Earth concert on 7/7/2007 at Wembley stadium. Wishing you and the boys all possible strength in these challenging times. Warm regards, Harry

When I worked with him at the Wall Street Joirnal his nickname was "Shock." That might seem inappropriate but it was a reference to his literary writing style. He had described someone in a story by saying they had a "shock of red hair." The use of "shock" to describe a coiffe was an erudite urbane "mot juste" which was typical of Paul. Thoughtful and kind man.

Paul was the very first friend I made at Yale while standing in line on Old Campus to register for housing. He was the most gregarious delightful soul. He made me laugh so hard, I knew we would be friends.
