Pauline Sutphen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Pauline Eva Marie (Bellemare) Sutphen (August 4, 1935 - January 31, 2025) and Stanley Waters Sutphen, Jr. (March 23, 1932 - May 17, 2016) were a devoted couple whose lives were defined by love, family, and service. Together, they built a legacy that will endure in the hearts of their loved ones.

Pauline was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, to the late Adelard Joseph and Blanche (Belliveau) Bellemare. Raised in the Little Canada neighborhood of Lowell, she cherished her French-Canadian heritage and spoke French as her first language. She attended St. Louis School and was an active member of St. Louis Parish. Pauline was known for her kindness and selflessness, always prioritizing her family's needs. After retiring, she and Stanley moved to Pelham, New Hampshire, before eventually settling on Marco Island, Florida.

Stanley was born in Hopewell, New Jersey, to the late Stanley W. Sutphen, Sr., and Cornelia Ann (Case) Sutphen. He grew up on a farm in Everittstown, New Jersey, and at the age of 17 enlisted in the U.S. Navy before transferring to the Army. Stanley served with distinction during the Korean War as part of the 38th Infantry Regiment. His service earned him numerous accolades, including the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars for participation in two campaigns, the Combat Infantry Badge for active ground combat service, the United Nations Service Medal for his role in defending against North Korean aggression, the National Defense Service Medal for honorable wartime service, and the ROK Presidential Unit Emblem in recognition of distinguished service by South Korea. After his military service, Stanley worked for Cox Fuel in Lowell before advancing his career in the heating industry with Exxon Mobil until his retirement.

Pauline and Stanley met in Lowell and were married in November 1955. Together, they raised four children: Joanne Sutphen Soucy (Russell), Ronald Jay Sutphen (John Freudenberg), Cheryl Sutphen Avola (Charles), and Debra Jane Sutphen. Their family grew to include six grandchildren: Scott Soucy (Sharon) and their daughter Ava; Justin Soucy (Emily) and their daughter Grace; Cody Labriola (Darielle) and their daughter Millie; Jordyn Labriola Arket (Dan) and their beloved dogs Tilly and Tucker; Nick Avola (Chelsea) and their children Alex and Emilia; and the late Alex Avola.

Pauline was predeceased by her siblings Marcel "Mike" Bellemare, Richard Bellemare, Henriette Bellemare, Therese Bellemare, Jacqueline "Jackie" (Bellemare) Wolfgang, Robert "Bob" Bellemare, Anita (Bellemare) Plamondon, and Aline (Bellemare) Drouin. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Mercier as well as many nieces, nephews, and their families. Stanley was predeceased by his siblings Richard Case Sutphen, Elmer Martin Sutphen, and Mary Esther Waters (Sutphen) Stillwell.

Pauline and Stanley shared an unbreakable bond that inspired all who knew them. Their lives were marked by devotion to each other, their family, and their community. They will be deeply missed by those fortunate enough to have been part of their lives but will be remembered for their enduring legacy of love, strength, and compassion.

A private service will be held for immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in their memory to VFW Post 10722 at 6 Main Street, Pelham, NH 03076 or to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America at 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001.

Joanne, Ronnie, Cheryl and Debbie,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom and my
Matante. She was so welcoming and loving to me as a child. Memories of walking over to your house after school at Saint Louis are happy ones. Miss you all, cousins. Love you all and are thinking of you and your Mom and Dad. Sending prayers to your Mom and my Matante. She was very special,

Joey

So sorry for your loss, but she is at peace. I remember a story when I went to Bailey´s pharmacy in Lowell mass some lady came up to me and said hi Pauline and I looked at her. I said I´m not Pauline. She said oh my you look so much like your aunt. I guess I have the genes of the Bellemare family, but I felt so good that I look like your mom in someway.
