Peggy Evans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 8 to Jun. 9, 2007.
Peggy Evans (Humphreys), age 65, passed away on June 7, 2007, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1942, in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Fletcher Thomas and Macie Thomas.
She is survived by her daughter, Ashlee Humphreys of Evanston, Ill.; her husband, Phillip Evans, Coeburn; her brothers, Jerry Lee Thomas and wife Susan Thomas, Abingdon, and Dr. Ival Thomas and wife Kathy Thomas, Brighton, Colo.; her nieces and nephews, Hunter Thomas, Kimberley Thomas, Paige Diller and husband Andy Diller of Brighton, Todd Thomas and wife Becky Thomas of Bristol and Leah Rice and husband Pryor Rice of Birmingham, Ala. She is also survived by her aunt, Naomi Joyce, and several cousins to whom she was as close as a sibling, Brenda Neal, Wayne McClellan, Frank McClellan, Sandra Davis, and their children, all of Southwest Virginia. She will also be missed by special friends, Carl and Jan Glover, and their sons Jeffrey and Casey Glover of Johnson City.
Peggy was a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Memphis and received a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She dedicated her professional career to the service of America's veterans, working as a nurse in the VA system for 30 years, including seven years at Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City. After her retirement from the VA, she became an assistant professor of nursing at King College in Bristol, where she was a beloved teacher.
Those who love Peggy will remember her unique spirit. She was known for her generosity and hospitality to family and friends. Her interests in life extended well beyond her professional career. She was a continental traveler, and especially loved taking road trips. She was also passionate about cooking and often received praise for her famous dishes. She loved to try new things, and was delighted to learn to golf, garden and fish with her husband, Philip. To all of these pursuits, Peggy brought a one-of-a-kind enthusiasm that those who love her will never forget. Most of all, she will be remembered as a proud, dedicated, and loving mother to her daughter, Ashlee, who is currently completing her Ph.D. at the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Weaver Funeral Home and other times at her residence. Services will be at Weaver Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 10, with Dr. Errol Rohr and Dr. Greg Jordan officiating.
Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday June 10, 2007, at Temple Hill Cemetery in Castlewood.
In lieu of flowers, Peggy has asked that contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association at P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or online at www.diabetes.org. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] or Ashlee Humphreys, 614 Holston Ave., Bristol, TN 37620. Online condolences may be registered at www.weaverfuneralhome.net.

King College grieves the loss of our our dear friend and colleague, Peggy. She was a breath of fresh air and a valued professor at the college. I will miss her conversations over lunch, her laughter over good stories told with enthusiasm, and her compassion for others. I well remember what a delight Peggy was during our Italy Study Program a few years ago. I will always remember her wonderful smile and humor.

May God surround her family and many friends with comfort, mercy and peace as we mourn her death.

Peggy was an excellent instructor. She always had such a great outlook on life. She told such great stories about her life including her work at the VAMC. She was a great inspiration in my life as well as many others. She will be greatly missed. May god be with all of her family, friends, and loved ones in this time of loss. May the memories of the joy you have shared with Peggy over the years bring you peace and comfort in this time of loss.

I finally met Peggy for the fist time about a week ago and loved her immediately with her great smile and sense of humor. I had heard wonderful stories about her for years. It was my pleasure to have had that one afternoon of being in her presence! Sincere wishes for Peggy's loved ones. Philip Evan's cousin, Letta, Clarksville, TN

Peggy, you were loved by all and we will miss you. Your opening prayers before our meetings always set the tone for meaningful discussion. And Peggy, you always knew how to insert just enough humor to lighten our hearts; we know you will continue to watch over us. Your family and friends know our lives were touched by a beautiful person.
