Peggy Wald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 13 to Jan. 15, 2023.
Wald, Peggy A. (n?e Christenson). Age 91, of Shoreview, MN. Died at her home from cancer on 1/9/2023. Born in Litchfield, MN, on 1/2/1932, to Leroy & Marguerite (Quinn) Christenson, the 5th of 10 children. As a child, she loved singing, skating, swimming, playing sports with her brothers, and tumbling. She detassled corn for two summers and was always proud of earning bonuses for perfect attendance. She graduated in 1949 from Litchfield HS, where she was in choir, drama, marching band (as a majorette), and cheerleading, all while working many jobs, including as a dental assistant and movie usher. Upon graduation, though just 17, she went to Washington, DC, where she worked in the US Hydrographic Office. In 1950, she moved to St. Paul, where she lived on Summit Ave. and worked downtown, first for the Minn. Republican Party (though a lifelong DFLer) and later for Ben Franklin S&L. At 19, she and three other women drove an old bakery truck to LA and spent the summer living and working in Hollywood. Earlier that year, she met Roger Wald, a St. Thomas student. They married on 8/22/1953 and moved to Belle Plaine, where Rog had his first teaching job. They moved to Minneapolis in 1955 and, in 1956, bought their first house, a little rambler in Richfield. Rog later got a job with the Roseville Area Schools, so in 1959 they moved to Roseville, where they lived until 1980, when they built a house in Falcon Heights. She gave her all raising her 6 kids, yet still volunteered with the Brownies, Head Start, and other groups. She always tried to make holidays and birthdays special for her kids and, later, her grandkids. In 1979, she began a successful career as a Realtor. She started with Dan Dolan Realty and worked with Harstad Homes and Edina Realty before retiring in 1999. In retirement, she and Rog enjoyed attending their grandchildren's events, traveling in the US and abroad, playing senior tennis, and taking walks. Widowed in 2012, after 59 years of marriage, she moved in 2015 to Applewood Pointe of Shoreview, where she was in many activities, including book club and the decorations committee. She sang in choirs nearly all her life, loved attending concerts and plays, and was a serious gardener. She was passionate, energetic, determined, and creative. The ultimate "people person", she stayed connected with a wide circle, including her many nieces and nephews and countless friends. Her biggest regret about having a long life was surviving all her siblings, whom she missed terribly. Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son Mark; her sisters Kate Merz, Bette Mathias & Dorothy Flynn; and her brothers Wally, Gerald, Chuck, John, Paul & Henry Christenson. Survived by her children John (Marianne Remedios) of Edina, Judy Werner (Mike) of White Bear Twp., Beth Wald Hanzal of Lakeville, Tom (Brianne Scheel) of Appleton, WI, and David (Karin) of White Bear Twp.; her grandchildren Jennifer Ballman, Chris Werner, David Hanzal, Katie Larson, Edith Scheel, and Andrew, Carolyn, Dan, Kevin, Matthew, Joe & Aidan Wald; and 8 great-grandchildren. Visitation at 10AM and memorial service at 11AM, Thu., 5/11, Incarnation Lutheran Church, 4880 Hodgson Rd., Shoreview. Memorials suggested to Catholic Charities.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Peg when I cleaned for her at Applewood Pointe. I cleaned for her daughter Beth for many years before that. I just loved Peg! I admired her so much. She was so active and so positive and loving. She was also so stylish! I don´t have the fashion gene; I always enjoyed seeing what cute outfit she would have on when I came to clean.
Covid ended our working relationship and I had hoped to resume things after it had passed. But none of us realized how long it would last. I am sad to hear of her passing, but I feel very blessed to have known her and to hear about many her great adventures.

I am so sorry to read of Peggy´s passing.
She was always so kind and warm to me when we would meet up at the Flynn home.
Please know I am thinking of you all.

The song, Oh, When the Saints Come Marching In came on the radio this week and I was belting out the words along with all the Christenson' siblings up in heaven. I miss all of them terribly, and am grateful for the connections with my cousins. See all of you this spring.
