PEIK LARSEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 26 to Jul. 27, 2014.
Larsen, Peik Irgens March 13, 1972 – July 23, 2014 Peik Larsen lived many lives in his too few years. From his youth as a gymnast turned gymnastics instructor to an Alaskan King Crab fisherman, Peik (as he always said, "Rhymes with cake! Like Birthday Peik!") was also a chef in the North End's The Daily Catch, a JetBlue crew member and a manager at The Kendall Hotel. Peik was nothing if not enthusiastic, gregarious and gleefully funny. Most importantly, Peik was a loving husband to Emi Fujiwara and an extraordinary father to their 4-year old twin boys, Kai and Ren. In his eyes, the family was a perfect unit and he its commander-in-chief. Such was Peik's boundless love and energy for his squad that each day Peik posed a question: "What's our plan, boys?" He was a compass whose needle always pointed at adventure. At each day's end, Peik asked the boys what they most enjoyed. He taught them about the world and reveled in their shared experiences. He transformed the mundane into magic: bike rides were exciting expeditions, snow piles became 30' alligators and his richly-detailed bedtime stories captivated the boys. As a son, brother, husband, father and friend, Peik prided himself on being a strong role model. To that end, he put himself through college at the age of 35. Peik balanced fatherhood, a full-time job and his studies to graduate last year. This spring Peik landed his most cherished professional role: a sixth-grade history teacher in the very same Cambridge public school system from which he emerged years ago. Inexplicably, at the age of 42, Peik died at home in Belmont, MA on Wed., July 23, 2014 after experiencing symptoms similar to food poisoning. Medical tests to determine the cause of death are pending. For his family and all of those whose lives Peik touched, the world is more dimly lit without him. Peik was born in Da Nang, Viet Nam on March 13, 1972. He was adopted by Pam and Rikk Larsen of 84 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA on January 26, 1973. It is this family home where he and Emi would later be married on June 21, 2008. Peik was one of ten children, six of whom were adopted from different races and countries. In order of arrival, Peik's siblings are Tage 43, Jens 42, Anika 40, Kari 42, Siri 39, Britta 38, Nissa 34, Christian 40 and Trygve 28. In marrying Emi, Peik happily embraced five new people into his family: Emi's parents, Sarah and the late Gary Fujiwara, and her brothers, Chris, Robbie and Nick. It was Peik's big personality – so buoyant, unselfish and authentic – that made him the heart of this family. There won't be a Larsen gathering that will not suffer from his absence. He was a catalyst for the best things in life: joy, adventure, fun, good food, laughter and mischief. Peik will be there in spirit to inspire us when cooking a good meal; playing a ridiculous, nonsensical game; delivering a heart-felt, rambling toast; or riding that fine line between the completely inappropriate and the utterly hilarious. That was Peik's genius. Knowing when to speak the truth, when to pull a punch or when to surprise the heck out of you with a giant, grizzly bear hug. He was strong and loving and irresistible. Like some magical spice, everything was better with Peik. It won't be the same without you, Peik. But, we'll do our best to celebrate you by emulating your zest for life and generosity of spirit. And we will honor and remember you by embracing our lives and all of the people in them with the same grace, humor and good will that you did. Peik's memorial service will be held Wed, July 30th @ 11:00 am at First Church Congregational of Cambridge, 11 Garden Street. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: Attn: Fund FBO Kai and Ren Larsen, Cambridge Trust Company, 1336 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138.

My dear friend, Peik. How I still think of you, miss you and love you so very much. I had searched Facebook for you for so many years, as the last time I was blessed with your company was in 1992 in Colorado. From the first day that we met,at gymnastics camp and became instant friends, you meant the world to me... and that will never change. You made my life so much better just by being a part of it. I love you for eternity, Tracy Shuda-Bugaring

R. I P. Mr. Larsen. He was my teacher last year and he was a really fun teacher. He was chill and made us laugh most of the time. He made everyone happy for school. My school just told us who the teacher was. We figured out during the summer that a teacher died. But we got told today it was Mr. Larsen. Just knowing that he isnt with us anymore feels empty a little in the inside. But my prayers go to his family.

Dear Larsen Family,

My mother called me today when she saw the wonderful write up about Peik in the Boston Globe and I am so shocked and saddened by this news. I have so many memories of the Larsen family from my days at Mass. Gymnastics Center (in particular, Kari, Siri, Anika, Britta and Nissa). I can picture Peik (although we called him Paige??) so clearly on the rings. He was all muscle and so strong. He was always friendly and nice to everyone at the gym. That was 25-30 years ago. Remarkably, I was walking home from work about 6 years ago and someone on the sidewalk called out my name. It was Peik - and it turned out we lived next door to each other in Garden Court in Cambridge. He recognized me after 25 years. We spent a lot of time catching up and it was great to hear about all the Larsen girls (and I am very impressed at where all of you landed - Broadway, for instance!?). Peik took me around the corner to the family house on Garden Street and showed me around and showed me that old news article that was hanging in your foyer on your family. It brought back so many memories. It was fun to have someone from my past next door and we bumped into each other regularly. The last time I saw Peik, he told me he and his wife were having twins and they were moving to Belmont. We remarked how he was moving to the town I grew up in and I was established in his hometown. I feel blessed that Peik popped back into my life for a moment to remind me of him before he left (to early). I am thinking of all of you and know that the Larsen family will always be strong.

I'm so sorry to hear that Peik passed away. I went to high school with Peik. Although I hadn't seen him for many years I will always remember what a good hearted and warm soul he was. This obituary described him so well, spoke to what he was truly. My condolences to the Larsens and his wife and two young sons, what a terrible loss for them especially.

I am incredibly sorry for your loss. Peik's kind, warm smile and sincere hello at preschool drop-off made an impression upon me when I first moved back from San Francisco a few years ago. We were new to the Belmont Coop preschool community and I kept thinking he had this welcoming "west coast" vibe. He and Emi's true kindness was confirmed when I got to know them better last summer when his beautiful boys did summer camp with me. They loved their Daddy and would run into his arms when he would pick them up each day. Peik's passing is a deep loss for everyone who was lucky to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Peik was an incredibly enthusiastic, encouraging, and positive individual and leader. He was our kind father figure in the gymnasium when I first started training for gymnastics. He had this fighting attitude that he instilled upon me and my teammates - "Don't give up. You got this." He will forever be in my heart. He has changed me in so many ways - taught me to be confident, to be a leader. I am saddened, but blessed to have had an opportunity to know and work with such an individual. I want Peik's family to know that he touched many of us in the West Coast and made an incredible impact and we'll never forget him.

Peik was at the Jet Blue gate for one of my trips from Boston to Oakland to see family (part the CRLS family - a big tribe with strong traditions). He spied me, said, "Mom, we are going to take very good care of you!" He gave me three seats across in the back and gave me cards so that I could watch the three televisions all at the same time, for free. Best flight I ever had. I fell in love with his energy and kindness and for giving me the "Mom" tribal honorific. What a great guy...how deeply we will all miss him.
